I wish I put one on the first day I got it. the front edge of the hood now has 3 stone chips. I tried to cover it with OEM touch up paint, and it looks uglier now :( ... Anyway, i ordered one from Amazon and will try to cover them and pretend they are not there.

The AVS bug deflector II is awesome. Doesn’t contact any paint. And it’s actually very low profile. Barely see it from the drivers seat.

What's the difference between the Bug Deflector and the Bug Deflector II ? Looking at pictures and reviews on Amazon, they look the same... thanks

I don’t know what the difference is. I have the II and it’s just like the one in the picture in the previous post. It’s pretty low profile. Not on the hood, but close.

I returned my Avs, there is not space between teh top of the grille and the bottom of the hood. The AVS deflector gets pinned between and pushes on the top of teh grille. But I can clearly see others on here, there is a wide gap especially that green (post 30), and the dark grey (post 28) 4Runners... I wonder if the hood can be adjusted...

Edit: The protector was also dinged and scuffed everywhere, due to very poor packaging...

Has anyone used the Weathertech hood protector? The stick on version. Seen one on 4runner the other day. Like the looks but don't know about its functionality. Just don't know about taping it to hood and what it would do to paint if I ever had to pull it off.

Contemplating just getting clear bra on hood. Just sold my 2002 Tundra and hood was tattered with chips from rocks and such after 19 years of driving it. Want to have my new rigs hood protected.

They are local to me and wasn't sure witch one I wanted. The stick on one did not line up with the hood line on the runner. that one was returned, I never left the parking lot. other one mounts up in a couple minutes, I've never used the supplied bump stops and go through a car wash often

4runner is stock. Tundra not so Much
I have the low profile one from weather tech and never put it on because I didn’t see the functionality of it it would protect the tip of the hood but idk. Also don’t like sticking stuff to paint. It’s sitting in a box. I want the higher profile one

yep, I returned 3 of them already. My under bonnet had paint come off. I just won't put a bug deflector now.

Try weathertech. mine is on its 3rd 5th gen now (long story) but no issues and takes a beating at least once a week in the car wash

Did you have any clearance issues between the bottom of bug deflector in the center and the upper radiator grill support? Just installed mine. Hood won't latch. Deflector hits painted area not allowing it to fully latch.

it takes a little extra force to get it to latch but nothing that caused concern

Can you post a pic of the gap between your hood and the upper part of the front end?

I’ll check my gap tomorrow for comparison. The AVS fit mine fine with no paint contact.

Just ordered the AVS bugflector II for my SR5. Had one on my Ford Explorer for over 10 years and it held up to lots and lots of abuse from car washes, to canoe tie down straps, and lots of bugs 7 stones. I can attest that the AVS is a good product.

Does the OEM one collect a lot of dust and junk under the deflector? I just bought the OEM one but haven't installed it yet since I'm trying to decide if I want to install PPF before installing the deflector to protect the paint. Any input/feedback from other will be appreciated as well.

I think they all collect dirt and junk under them.
When I wash the truck, I will slip a sponge under it to get some of the dirt out.
I plan on a full detail soon. I will remove the bug deflector for that, wax and polish the hood, then re-install the bugflector.

I installed the AVS deflector a few months ago and thought I got lucky avoiding any physical contact between the deflector and the top of the grill. Unfortunately, when I removed the deflector to clean the truck after a particularly long trip, I noticed on the driver's side where the deflector made contacted and wore away the paint. Im thinking of installing some clear protective film over the spot to avoid any more damage.

I am surprised. My AVS fits fine, no rubbing at all.
Hope it works out for you with the film.

Thought about heating it up to maybe bend the material a bit to see if that clears it up. Ive email their customer support to see what they have to say about it.

Contacted AVS about the paint contact and sent pictures of the rubbed spots on the top grill piece and on the underside of the deflector. The rep Im working with indicated he could not tell if the deflector was deformed or not. I asked if there are install strategies to mitigate this damage, but go response. The rep initiated a warranty replacement so they've shipped one out and he indicated that there should be some type of film included to be installed with the deflector...something that definitely did not come with the the deflector I ordered.

Anyway. Ive gotten some paint protection film and will be installing that following the next was, probably double-layering it.

mine is also scratched on the driver side above the headlight, and under the hood, I got paint chips caused by the deflector.

I have the Weathertec. It does absolutely nothing to deflect bugs from the windshield. Rock chips on the leading edge of the hood, sure you get that but that's about it. Never mind the rest of the front fascia, if paint protection is the objective do some sort of wrap. The aerodynamics of a brick are just that. The windshield angle just takes the full assault of bugs and rocks. I'm going to take it off the next time I hit the highway for any amount of time just to see if there is any difference. I doubt it. It may become a garage ornament.

I've got the AVS, and it looks good , fits fine and has survived the car wash.

However, it really doesn't do a great job of deflecting bugs. It does generally lift them up above my eye line but many still hit the windshield. But it's better than nothing and it's not expensive and it is super easy to install.

Wow, Ive been using them for 15 years and never had a chip or crack over 200,000 miles between 3 different trucks and automatic car washes too.
The AVS has held up just fine.
