The 80 series was my dream vehicle for awhile. I still think it would make a fantastic overland platform.

Last generation of proper off-roading Land Cruisers in the USA. Wish yours had factory front and rear lockers as well. Those SOLID AXLES..!!:benchpress:

Wish new 4Runners and Land Cruisers have solid axles than twigs in front.

The 5th Gen 4Runner will stomp a stock 80 with no lockers.

Especially one with the dog 155hp engine.

It's a nice truck at a nice price. Currently the bidding is under $6,000.

Mmm, as much as I love the 4runner, it will never stomp an 80 Series, even one with the 'dog' 3fe motor - essentially a tractor motor. Cast iron block and head, timing gears (no belt or chain here, folks), and relatively few electronics. Bolt that motor to the massive A440F transmission (basically a medium duty bus tranny) and again, all mechanical/hydraulic and an overbuilt driveline, and you have a vehicle that is nearly unstoppable.

The 80 Series LC will endure a level of use/abuse (and neglect) that would make our 4runners cry like a whipped puppy. Not saying it was perfect - the huge transmission robbed a lot of power and the 3fe was thirsty and slow, but the things would KEEP going. Besides, just carry extra fuel and slow down and enjoy the sights! As far as no lockers - it's the guy/gal behind the wheel that's going to make the most difference. Here's some shots of one of my old 80s that I did a light rebuild on.

Meh. I'm sure an 80 series is a bit more durable, but these 4runners aren't exactly tinker toys. I've been beating the shit out of mine for 57K miles and nothing's broken yet. And I know there's guys who are harder on theirs than me.

And, of course the driver is the biggest factor. But, I'll gladly keep my locker. It's gotten me out of a few jams.

100% agree that 4runners are no tinker toy - there's a reason why they have the reputation they have. And honestly, I wouldn't trade mine for anything out there. I was just making the point that a 4runner wouldn't/couldn't 'stomp' an 80. There's a reason why the LC is the 4wd of choice across the globe for 'severe' conditions.

Agreed! If I wanted something truly unstoppable, an 80 series would be top of the list!

Maybe if it was a factory locked 1997 40th anniversary edition with the 4.5 I would have believed you.

But honestly, the 1991s require an ungodly amount of aftermarket parts and if you take one off the shelf versus the ORP you will find that heavy ass pig will get bogged down.

We have owned every single Land Cruiser in our family since the 40 except the 55 and 100.

I will need to smoke something strong to think that a 30 year old antique with a tired ass engine is some type of legendary off-roader.

Love hate relationship with all my 80’s … the power windows just plain old sucked , head gaskets . My last was LX450 I did cummins 6T conversion , was a great truck after that .
I agree the 5th gen even though no straight axle , 5th is better truck

I have the gutless OG FJ80.

    Now that is slow.
