I just purchased an 05' and wish I would've known about a few other common problems. Yes, the head gasket is going to still be a possible problem. If its a V6 you also have the timing chain cover that could be a problem. Mine is leaking bad and is very expensive to fix. I'm looking for a write up so I can try it myself. Also the brakes will need to be upgraded to 5th Gen calipers. You can upgrade the rotors as well but there is some debate as the center bore is slightly different but the calipers are perfect. 4th Gen calipers freeze easily. 5th Gen has a 3MM larger piston and it seems to have fixed this. Take a flashlight and really look around in the engine bay. The timing chain cover had a TSB and could've been addressed under warranty so check with Toyota Service online. Just add the VIN and you should be able to see anything that was done at a participating dealer. Lastly make sure the actuator works and it goes into 4H and 4L with no problems. Check the center diff lock and make sure it works. If the previous owner did not engage you could have big problems.

These are things I wish I would've known before purchasing mine. I knew about the HG but not the rest. Good luck on the buy and hope everything works out.

    This and that

While quite a few folks have had calipers seize it's not as widespread as some like to say. Remember, when reading forums, only people who have a problem post about it. Those of us who never had an issue don't.
