Well, insurance will probably total it. Just happened so we’ll see.
2001 4x4 auto with shell. Front end damage. Guy made an illegal u turn in front of me.
What should I do with it?

Just as long as nobody got hurt?! If insurance totals it, let them take care of it.... after they cut you a check for a down payment on your new 4Runner. Or, if you have some mods done to the Tacoma, see if you can work something out with the insurance man/woman to get the parts you want.

    Southern CA vehicle, clear title.
Would anybody buy this as is?
Or do I need to wait for insurance since claim is started and police report is processing? Anyone with experience care to explain what is expected. NOTE: Other driver (with insurance) at fault. Vehicle most likely will be totaled.

As far as I know, a vehicle is only considered totaled when it has frame damage. Do you know if it does? Glad everyone is okay though.

So let me get this straight. Someone slowed down in front of you to make a left hand turn? And you SMASHED into them?
Or someone turned/pulled out in front of you and you SMASHED into them?
Sounds like a win win for you
Get a 4R?? That truck is fugly anyway...

Have no idea on frame status. Adjuster said over the phone if it’s over 100k miles and fluids leaking from impact, probably totaled. Of course that doesn’t make it official until a visual is conducted but I’m sure that’s where this is headed.

Well bummer, glad your Ok. Generally I’ve noticed that those heavy custom built bumpers, if yours is one, don’t like to give much and the energy gets transferred to the frame so my guess is you’ve got frame damage.

And again glad your ok, and hope for the best outcome.

Thank you. Personally I’d be really surprised if there is frame damage. But it will make a good donor truck for someone.

Buy it back from the insurance company and make it into a trail toy. :bananadance:

    Seriously, glad you're ok!

If they total it it will belong to the insurance company. You can buy it back from them and do whatever you like with it.

They will total it out if the repair cost is something like 80% of the vehicle's value. That doesn't take much on an older vehicle. Body work is crazy expensive.

    Appreciate both of your comments.
The only reason I would buy it back to to sell it to someone who has the means and knowledge to rebuild her. I certainly don’t but would love to see her continue to have the life she deserves, than to let insurance send her to the heap pile. Plus what would they offer versus what it’s REALLY WORTH? Seeing how they will go by what their book says a 21 year old truck with 401,xxx miles is worth.
Therefore, if someone steps forward with an offer I would seriously consider versus waiting the lengthy process just to wind up with a dismal check knowing she’s headed for the crusher.

Hope it gets a new home, hate to see a clean truck die because of insurance bean counters

I totally agree! Someone mechanically inclined could probably make a great trail rig with it. I would definitely look into the cost to buy it back if they total it.

That really looks like it could be fixed.. IMO. It's a "numbers racket" though, if the insurance company says due to it's age and mileage, it's worth X amount of dollars, and to fix it will cost 75% of what it's worth... it's probably totaled. Where we live in Wisconsin I've seen worse deer "hits", and they fix some of them! Look into buying it back from insurance though, you might make someone happy with a builder project.
