2019 4runner and beyond

Hello,

I own a 2019 4runner which is awesome, but I would like to know if I should hold on to it as long as I can , or trade it in for a full electric truck like the lightening from Ford, or just wait to see what Toyota comes out with pertaining to full electric any suggestions would be awesome

 

That's like asking what should my favorite color be? Just get what you want. Look at the pros and cons of what they are offering and get what suits you and your lifestyle best. Why did you buy a 4runner? Why would an electric truck like the lighting be a better vehicle for you? Would the electric truck suit my needs in a vehicle like the 4runner does? Basically, your car your money your choice

 

Buy a Tesla cyber truck.

 

As long as it continues to meet your needs, I think you should hold on to it forever. Or at least until they stop selling gasoline for a price you can afford, whichever comes first.

I wanted a 2019 because it doesnt have the Toyota safety sense nanny features and you still get a CD PLAYER which my 2020 does NOT have.
(Man, I miss playing my CD's in the truck)

What an odd question. You don't know if you should keep your car or want the people here to pick another one for you? Wow. What a time to be alive.

 

I guess you didn't notice, but this a 4Runner Enthusiast Forum.
Personally I think you should sell the 4Runner and buy a Prius or better yet a Smart Car.

 

Just my opinion but.... You now have one of the most reliable vehicles available. And I can't see the future but I'd be willing to say that the new Lightening is going to be chock full of issues. First, they tell you to never buy the first year of any model. And this isn't just a new model, it's all new technology. And second, it's a Ford. Not exactly known for their reliability. So it comes down to whether reliability means more to you than being the guy with the new electric truck. Very easy decision for me.
On another note: On another unrelated forum they were discussing this truck. I brought up the fact that in the US right now, there is a serious shortage of skilled, trained technicians. Again, I can't tell the future but I firmly believe there will be a ton of situations where these trucks have problems and there will be no one, or at least a serious shortage of, techs who can figure out what's wrong with them. I can envision case after case where the truck sits at the dealer for weeks while they wait for technical assistance to get back to them with what they need to do to diagnose these things. Again, this is just my, (somewhat educated), guess. It will be interesting to visit the Lightening forums in about 6 months.

Go electric when there are an equal number of charging stations to gas stations and when you can drive across town without having to stop and charge. There is no way electric is the future.

 

How do you "fill it up" out in the boonies? A gas powered generator?

 

There are less moving parts in electrical versus gas but this new electrical age is still unknown.

If you want to go on a road trip. Well good luck unless you want a spend a few hours charging at a truck stop.

Myself I will stick with gasoline. Let somebody else fork over the cash and go through the growing pains of finding the issues associated with electric vehicles.

I don’t see Ford or GM or any company so confident in their electrics that they are willing to extend the bumper to bumper warranty beyond 3/36. They have more money than me so let them go for it.

 

I was referring to if these companies any of them Ford, GM, Toyota, Honda etal have such faith in the quality of the electric vehicles.....simply make it a good warranty.

Almost all manufacturers have 3/36 Bumper to Bumper on a standard gasoline vehicle. So if they want us to buy into electric make a better warranty is my thought. Why should the average consumer bear the risk of the new technology and repair costs? Just my opinion

 

Did you see the warranty on the hybrid components? 8 years 100k miles, battery is 150k. I would say they are standing behind they stuff. That being said, we just bought a RAV4 plug in hybrid and they wanted 12 grand for full bumper to bumper warranty. Hard pass.

 

Ahh ok I see your point now spare parts. I did not notice that intially. Yes those time frames and miles seem respectable.

I would pass also in $12k for warranty yikes.

 

Keep it, just look at all the shortages on Toyota lots right now. Green deal is a grift and the proof is in the coal usage.

 

Simple. If you plan ahead, you'll pack a couple of 5-gallon cans of electricity before heading out to the boonies.

 

1. Know your limitations. What is your range at highway speeds or slow crawling.
2. Planning. Know where to charge on your trip. Get a full charge before embarking into the wilderness. Tailor your off-road trip to your capabilities.
3. Charging stations will eventually be in as many places as gas stations. There’s money to be made.
4. If your stressing, yeah, take a generator.
5. When the EV 4Runner, or something similar, is available think about the forums and the mods the enthusiasts will devise. Like electrical systems, lighting, auxiliary batteries, solar charging, range extension techniques, etc.
A lot of people will be having fun with this.

 

We are living in transitional times, moving very rapidly in different segments of many industries. Most of us know how fast we are accelerating towards electricity and hydrogen.

These technologies are not that new, like many think it is, it has never been mass produced as a result that more obstacles will arise on the way for the consumer.

The same happened with combustion engines, taken more than a Century of consistent development.

You are asking a more personal question; we do not know your personal lifestyle. You need to analyze and come to a consensus with yourself, and you will find the answer to your question.

I am a Dinosaur and don’t want to buy a vehicle where I can’t check engine oil myself, regardless which brand vehicle. I am a strong believer in the dipstick; far of buying a non-gasoline vehicle; that is why it’s nearly impossible for someone to answer your question, we all have or likes, believes and lifestyle.

All I can tell you, the 4runner is a proven concept. Today all electric and hydrogen vehicles need to do the same and become a proven concept.

 

Well what I'm trying to get at is, if I hold on to the 4runner for 9 to 10 years will be worth anything if all these electric cars will be running around?
