Need an astronomical telescope

Have any stargazers or amateur astronomers here? I know nothing about astronomy. But my 10-year-old nephew is interested in astronomy lately. So I want to buy an astronomical telescope for him. Any brand can you recommend?

My two initial recommendations - either a dobsonian style, where you get a tremendous amount of scope for the value (downside is they are big and can be cumbersome to move around); or something like a celestron nexstar, for the ease of use and auto tracking feature. I would also budget for some extra filters, eyepieces, and a 2x barlow.

I have a 12" Dobsonian and the thing is massive. It is also a manual style and will take some getting used to, especially manually tracking stars. In a dark sky environment, the dobsonian is unbeatable for value and how many deep sky objects you can pick up. The learning curve on this type of telescope is fairly difficult in the beginning.

For a younger child and most people getting into astronomy, I would also recommend a Celestron Nexstar. They auto-track fairly well and allow you to enjoy your viewing experience versus trying to manually find objects. These scopes are also great for astrophotography, which is what fascinates people the most. The learning curve on this type of telescope is fairly easy through all stages.
