Hydro locking

What would be the best way to prevent hydro locking on a 5 Gen 4runner

The intake is in the passenger side fender. Keep it above water and you won't have a problem.

 

You can go pretty deep without a snorkel. This is about 3' deep, my ass end was floating. No issues at all. ...just don't stop. Gotta keep the revs up to keep the exhaust clear.

As long as the fender doesn't fill with water, you're fine. At least on the 4th gen it's actually pretty well sealed. I still need to do my rear breather extension, but I doubt I'll be seeing anything deep for awhile yet. Regardless, I do have a snorkel albeit it's mostly for dust control these days.

 

Speaking of rear diff breather, i don't have one, and I changed my fluid after that (and a lot of smaller) crossing. Fluid was water-free. No problems.

 

that was impressive. and you didn't get any water in your air box? dose a snorkel help with keeping the water out.

 

I did not.

Snorkel might help some, but it's really there for driving through dust, not water.

 

I'd say a snorkel helps more in older vehicles with less electronics, but overall, it will help regardless until you swamp an ECU or something else important. I got it mostly for dust because the trails out here are generally really bad with it.

 

Thanks for the advice. had a friend with an 02 tacoma hydro lock his motor. i was not there at the time he said he didn't go in deep water. but thats his story.

 

There's a guy over on t4r that just killed his v8 because of an aftermarket bumper and no fender liner.

 

Fender skirts should always be inspected before fording.

I killed an 01 Tacoma 6cyl. when it flooded in South Houston 4 years ago. I had gone in and out of puddles up to 3' high all afternoon but hit a puddle about 1' just right where the splash went into the air box

 

Forgot to mention I had the pleasure of fording again in the recent Houston floods on the Northside with my 16 runner. Went through a couple of spots up to 3' deep on long stretches of road. Trick is not to stop and keep wave crest going at a moderate crawl in 4. I did not plan on it and I was thinking to myself at the time what kind of dumbassery did I get myself into again. Twice. Door seals held perfectly. No other issues.

I am going to put a snorkel on soon. I had one on my 01 Taco after its drowning. Got a new used moto installed the same time as the Toyota paid for frame replacement. Great truck.

Other lesson: I would always check and or replace the fender well skirts. They are cheap to make and worth every penny. I believe the argument that they aid in keeping a small bubble under the chassis as well as splashes out. With a 5th gen 4Runner, the skirts should last a few years but still should be checked especially if you get work done to it. Sometimes a mechanic will pull them off the fasteners to change oil or adjust alignment. I always carried a bunch of spare fasteners for my Taco.

I miss my Taco and after I rolled it on ice I made sure to go get another Toy.
