I’m hoping someone can help me here. I did do a search and couldn’t find anything about the remote start. I’m in the process of ordering a 2021TRD ORP and one of the options I would really like in this car is the ability to remote started. Does it make sense to have Toyota install it as part of the purchase or does it make more sense to buy a third-party remote start. Please note I know absolutely nothing about this subject. If I get a third-party, I will have to pay someone to install it because if I tried it I’d end up wiring it to the gas tank or something like that. Can anyone give me any advice? Many thanks in advance.

I also wanted a remote start. BUT I did not like the fact when you open the driver door, the engine shuts off. I know it is a security feature but just did not want to have to push the button to restart and go lol.

I agree thats the only major annoying feature but I really want it for the winter time so I can get it warmed up.

Aftermarket doesn't give you the Toyota app based auto start tho, or is there a way to connect that?

I hate that it shuts off every time I open the door, but the app is nice when it works. I like that it tells me the windows are open or doors unlocked. Its far from flawless though.

Remote start from the app seems to have about a 20% chance of working. It is annoying.

I hate factory remote start, but mine already had it on there. I still use it in the winter if I remember to turn my heat knobs up and seat warmers on the night before

Choose wisely, I've read several horror stories where aftermarket remote start systems jacked up the car's electronic systems.

Personally I'm leary of aftermarket electronics in a modern vehicle.

Honestly I believe it comes down to the kind of factory start that's already in your 4Runner. If you have the push button start, I think the 4Runner is always going to shut off when you open the door. With older 5th gens the engine only shuts off if you hit the break pedal before putting the key in the ignition.

If I was ordering a new 4Runner I'd probably have the factory install remote start as an option. If I was buying another 5th gen like mine I'd install it myself, because there are a couple plug and play remote starts for the 4Runner.

I installed the 12 Volt Solutions remote start in mine back in November 2019. It's still by far one of my favorite things I've done. Warm car in the winter, cool car in the summer...the only thing that's annoying is I always double tap the lock to turn the headlights off when locking my car. Sometimes I don't hear the second beep and I hit lock a third time too soon and the truck fires up. Then I have to manually turn the damn lights off and hit the break pedal.

I’m getting a remote start put on mine by my Toyota dealer. He said I had two options. One with my key fob that is good for about 400 feet, which is the one I want, as I just need to use it here at home. He said I could spend $600 bucks and that one would be an additional fob thing but that range was good for 1,500 feet. People in town like it because they can shoot the signal out an office window to parking area.

I have a ‘21 TRD Off Road Premium as well, I am also researching remote start options. I think I’ll most likely go the factory Toyota route. I put a call to a couple of dealerships for quotes, none would say on the phone for some reason… waiting for return calls. I am expecting somewhere in the $500 range.

Will the Toyota-installed remote start link to the Toyota app also, or only via key fob?

I am super jealous because my wife’s ‘21 Highlander can be started from the Toyota app! As well as door locks and a few other things.

I have a SR5 Premium I bought new and had the remote start installed when I bought it and prior to picking up the vehicle. I think the dealer has someone come in and do them but not positive. I just have a fob not controlled through a cell phone and the vehicle DOES NOT shut off when you open the door to get in. For me that was the most important thing I was concerned about. Mine works fine no issues going on three years now.

Thanks! Yes, that was a concern of mine also… I would rather it didn’t shut off when opening the door. But mine has the push-button start, so I don’t know if that has something to do with it.

I hate that it shuts off when you open the door. I don't care anymore since I only really use the app to keep the truck cool with my dog inside. What I like about the app is it tells me when it started and I can just keep restarting it if I'm going to be more than the 10 minutes. I've used it to heat the vehicle a few times, but most of the time its not cold in Dallas.

The dealer can install/program remote start on any 4Runner. Mine was sitting on the lot with a leveling kit and tires added(for an extra $7k), so I had them return it to stock and add remote start as part of the deal. Dealers try to make it sound like a big deal, but it isn't. They don't even install anything, just program the key.

I was a bit disappointed and figured this would be part of the sat nav, but it's not.

I asked a couple of dealerships about adding remote start on my 2021 Venture, and nothing is available from Toyota at this time, but they said check back next year. It's supposed to be a small ECU unit that mounts on the left side of the dash.

If anyone has found a Toyota part number for this, please pass it along.

I do not have JBL Stereo, which has remote start built in.

Compustar here. I can start it, itll lock. I can then unlock, and open the door, with out the engine shutting down, it will however, if you : step on the brake, try and put it in gear, and the like. But door? Nope, stays running. And its worked (ive had it a week after i bout the rig) fine for years. Install was easy also.

    None yet. Rock rails ASAP.
Do you have factory keyless entry or does the compustar fob provide keyless entry? I want to be able to start my car from afar, walk up and have it unlock by touch, then get in and go. I am too spoiled and don’t want to have to dig my key fob out to manually unlock it.

No factory garb. All compustar. I can start the rig, if in a clear area from like half a mile away. I get a response back on the fob that its running, and doors are locked. I can unlock the rig, with it running, and hop in. Easy peasy. I dont know about the "by touch" thing. Lil fancy for me lol. Hell, theres (for more coin obviously) app you can put on your phone. Do all sorts of shit.
Best of luck finding what you want.

In my TEP I have the remote start, and it shuts off when I unlock the door. It’s SO annoying! Is there a way to program it to not do that? From the sound on this thread, some aren’t like that. My previous car had an aftermarket remote start that worked so much better, and stayed on for 19 minutes until it auto turned off. I think this one turns off after 9. I love a remote start on cold snowy winter days!
