    hello all!
We have a 2017 and a 2001 4runner. well, up until last week we had a 2001 4runner. The shop said it would cost 6900 to put in a new engine. I don't think we can afford to do this. We are looking to sell it. Is this something that folks would be interested in purchasing? the body is in great shape- it's been across the country a number of times. 170000 original miles on it. New tires, new starter, relatively new exhaust. I have kept a records book on it... just don't want to see it go to a junk yard. Anyone out there interested? or any ideas as to what I could do with it? Thanks!
    RR:)

Once you decide how much it's worth and what you would be willing to take for it?
Post lots of pic's and information here. It may find a new home.

    If that doesn't work....try here https://bringatrailer.com/truck-4x4/

Good luck and I'm bummed for you.

yes, it's very sad. I can't get a real answer as to what is wrong. The mechanic said he would have to pull the oil pan(?) and that would cost around 600 bucks. he thinks it needs a new motor without even doing that. the other shop (the one that puts in motors)said it would cost around 6900 for a new motor- i was willing to go to 5k, but .... i don't know? the problem with moving all the time is it limits my options of mechanics because I just don't know any. I can keep looking and just tow it up to our house. And I am bummed too... I love that truck.
oh-- and Welcome home- to silver slug and moon landing. thank you:)

My gut says bring it home and don't give up yet. Too many unknowns. It may or may not need an engine - replacement?
There must be hundreds and hundreds of TOYOTA enthusiast in your area. You have a good reason to get to know some of them - 99.9% of them will share what/who they know. jm2c and thanks;)

I agree with Moon Landing, bring her home. Maybe some folks from this forum can direct or help lead you in the direction of a repair shop they trust. Lot of good people on this forum, and thank you.

I get your pain. I spent over $5k over the past 3 years fixing up an old 90's Explorer that I got out of high school. It was my baby really and I enjoyed that truck immensely. I fixed multiple oil leaks each year, then rear diff started going, then some gas smell, then the trans started leaking as well during the winter time. I never drove that that thing in winter and looked new.

I finally decided to part with it this year and that is why I am getting a new 4R since it the closest I could find to the old body on frame SUV. I am an accountant and I had an emotional attachment to that Ford so I spent money good after bad for a while. Although after 29 years of ownership you expect stuff to go bad just due to age.

If I had a ton of room and knew more about mechanics I would have kept it. It took me 2.5 years deciding to part with it and knowing the new 5th Gen 4R would be now more soon helped make that decision for me. In addition, each time I had someone work on it parts were getting more difficult to find and finding someone who knew how to work on it was tough also.

Best of luck with your decision, I still miss that old truck and now anxiously await my new one. The spot is empty in the garage just waiting.
