I got some rust on the bottom of my 4runner, having it there drives me crazy so I am good about getting to it before it gets bad. How should I treat rust when I have a black paint (not rubberized kind) undercoat.

I'm thinking that I should sand the rust with sand paper and a bit of the area around it with sand paper, before using rust converter incase I missed anything, then spray primer and black rustoleum paint to protect the metal.

Is that a good method of going at it?

Who cares? This never shows everything anyway.
From what I've heard, if you've got rust already, treat it best you can. Sand it off if possible. Then coat it with Fluid Film or Woolwax. Using something that might chip will let moisture into that chip and all of a sudden you'll have full on rot underneath something that looks good. You'll have to reapply the stuff periodically, but it should protect and might even stop the existing rust from spreading. I've also heard good things about Krown if you have Krown in your area.
