4Runner was purchased and serviced since new by Toyota dealer in 2006. In 2021 at state inspection suddenly noticed that left rear of frame was gone and major holes in front. Did dealers know and put who knows how many people at risk

It has been known since the beginning of time that Toyotas are extremely rust prone.

This is my seventh Toyota so I must have been due for a bad one. Dealer watched it rust away

We'll be checking this clean 2007 4Runner with only 42k miles on the clock. The owner mentioned it got some frame rust. We'll take a closer look at it after we finished installing the suspension from 4Wheelonline onto the Silverado this week and clear the garage. Hope the rust is not that bad.

If rust was addressed you probably have a lot of life left in a 2007

On that note, and since we're talking about rust, I took these photos from the underside of my vehicle. I've mentioned this to the dealer since day one (the hilt was already rusting about a month after I took it off the dealer), but they have never made a note on the service calls. Is this level of rusting considered surface rust and "normal"?

FYI, I live in SF and the car only has 9000 miles on it.

took a look at photos. You are at the start it will get seriously worse if not addressed now. my 2005 is so bad I won’t jack it up to take pic.

Thanks Dogman. The dealer has been telling me that it is "normal". I opened a case with customer experience, the warranty is over by a year but I'm using the pandemic as my excuse for not being able to take care of it sooner. I gave them a call about two years ago but they never told me the exact steps needed to get this resolved. It's a shame that a company like Toyota refuses to properly address my safety concerns. I' want them to at least acknowledge this problem (and the reason they won't take care of it) in writing. I can simply go and pay to have it fixed, but they should address these issues since my I've barely paid it off. The new 2021 models are coming with coated frames, I took a photo of one of them at the dealer.

dealer dropped the ball...they should have address it...and inform you..and your options....and the company needs to make good..a company like Toyota, who makes a boatload full of money, needs to suck it up...and repair...it's not rocket science...

I do recall seeing a couple of frames outside a Toyota dealership on our last visit. A guy walking around said they were for a frame recall, I remember this, but I thought this was over with long ago. Our old '86 pickup had bad issues with rust, the cab not so much, but the box went bad in about a year and a half, once rust was noticed by the wheel well.

I am planning on putting fluid film on the hitch as soon as I get mine with a wax applicator pad and then have it sprayed I think each year (whole underbody).

Its really amazing to see such a well regarded vehicle with these rust problems.

My 2005 with 160,000 miles has zero rust on the frame and Toyota frame treatment from the Japanese factory has held up. Not really the dealer's fault IMO.

The painted body is 100% rust-free as well.

Have you driven it on the beach/in salt water? To me that looks like massive salt exposure, especially for only having 9,000 miles. Something isn't adding up.
