There is a nice 4Runner TRD Off-Road premium for sale by a private party with only 16,000 miles on it. I have owned Jeeps for the last 18yrs so I know what to look for on Jeeps, but I am new to the Toyota club.

I am wondering what some of the common problems are with this generation of 4Runners and trim level, and what to look for when inspecting the vehicle.

Additionally if any of you use OBD2 scanners those recommendations are welcome as well.

Thanks for reading, and have a great day!

Welcome to the forum, with only 16k on it there is not much happening there, other than it possibly being a flood vehicle.

Thanks for the reply! Would a flood vehicle pop on a carfax? I imagine it would only if it was reported to insurance. If it doesnt pop on carfax, any *tips* on inspecting for obvious water damage?

I was just kinda thinking out loud there, but you could look at some electrical connections. Frame rust has been the biggest problem, but with that low mileage it’s probably fine.

Do you know any of the history (location bought/owned)? Flood damage is more likely if from a state where floods/hurricanes have been an issue lately, although that's not to say someone couldn't have gotten into a lake or river...the mileage would probably mean very few issues. Why is the owner selling?

Another factor is how much is the owner asking? Is it priced low enough that you aren't tempted to just buy new? The one biggest plus on a 2019 vs. newer, though, is that was the last year without all the new electronic safety nannies that I hate. I also have a 2019.

I live in Arizona, which is prone to flooding during the Monsoon season, but it is only really an issue if some idiot try's to drive through a wash area that basically becomes a river. They actually passed what they literally call the "Stupid Motorists" law, where if someone drives through one of these washes during a flood and gets stuck and needs to be rescued and/or their car rescued, they are responsible for all the costs including emergency services. Despite the law, it happens every single year! A few years back I witnessed a Ferrari literally washed away!

It is a 2019 TRD Off-Road Premium with 16000 miles, fully loaded, super clean carfax, 4-5K in upgrades (new BFG KO2 tires, custom rock rails/step ups, professional tint, professional lift) - they were asking 45K offered 42K, settled on 43K. I think its a smoking deal????????? :bananadead:

I don't know about a 'smoking deal', that's getting upward of new pricing. But, seeing as it has the upgrades, really low miles, premium trim, and if it's an Arizona truck, it sounds ok if you've driven it and are satisfied everything works. Especially without the TSS and such...:crapstorm:

    Got any photos?

I haven't bought any used so can't really tell about problems. The only problem I see is spending problem. When ever you see something new tempted to buy. I newer had this problem with my previous Toyota's.

As for monitoring I keep a scanguage II to monitor things like engine temp, transmission temp, battery voltage, etc.. Would be useful to see any codes if I ever get..:D

I edited last post and posted photo. I searched the entire united states using Auto Trader for new and used vehicles with under 45000 miles, 45000 as price, TRD Off-Road Premium as trim, and NOT ONE SINGLE result. Dealers also always have dealership fees, 10% on taxes, and sh*tty trade in values.

KBB has it listed as 44-47K private party, which doesnt account for some of the upgrades, so yeah maybe not as smoking as I thought, but I am like you I am not a huge fan of electronic nanny state sh*t! My jeep still has manual roll down windows! :muscleflexing:

I was looking at that scan gauge II today, not sure if I ran across it on here or somewhere else, looks pretty sweet.

I am coming from the Jeep culture so well aware of the "Just Empty Every Pocket" if thats the spending you were referring too! :spending:

Looks to be in very nice condition, from what I can see in the one photo. Do you know if it has KDSS? The easiest way to tell is an extra thick front sway bar, with the ends mounted to the lower control arms, w/ hydraulic lines running along the driver side frame rail. Not a deal breaker if not, just nice to have.

Make sure there is no leaks or rust on KDSS components.

    Update -
Since the OP is new to 4runner world, You can find TRD Off-road Premium without KDSS as well. KDSS is an optional component available for TRD Off-road trim made by an Australian company called Kinetic. KDSS is a hydraulic pump on one side of the sway bar to control body roll.

Thanks @glwood54 and @kmeeg for the KDSS info! I put in the VIN at Toyotas website and it said that this 4Runner came with KDSS from the factory. I wasn't aware of this feature, but my good buddy who has owned a 4Runner for last 7yrs said this was a "must have" feature for him. So thanks for bringing it to my attention. Now lets hope it doesn't look the pictures that @kmeeg posted!

It looks good. Everyone is different but above $40k I would go 2021 OR over 2019 ORP modded or not
