Why don't 4Runner owners wave?

I live in a rural farming area and on the secondary roads, most folks wave to each other no matter what they're driving.

Not a ton of 4Runners around here, but I pass by maybe 2 or 3 on my way to work. None of them wave, but all are driven by women.

Never thought a friendly gesture like waving could be considered "gay" and be met with such animosity, but people these days are losing their minds in America. Sad.

Well, this add's a little different of a twist to it. I grew up rural as well, and it's certainly a different mindset.
I do not think waving is 'gay', and i super agree that the state of America is very sad these days. I believe there are different courtesies depending on where you are/what activity you are partaking in.
As a woman whose lived both rural and city, I would never wave or acknowledge a fellow driver while driving alone, especially a male. If a male waved at me, I'd become hyper aware.
Unfortunately for safety reasons, this could just be a protection mechanism to make sure not to invite unwanted attention in general in a rural area. (Although this is clearly not your intention, nor am I assuming it is-just an overall viewpoint from a woman who has been on the other side ;-) )

I don't get it....why would you wave? And I grew up in the south too....I mean, I wave at people I know, but not just someone who bought the same vehicle as me and every third person on the road.

Too cool to wave at other trims? :D

I guess people in Hawaii have great taste in vehicles!

I travel through rural areas often and generally have the same experience. :)

Yeah, it's a screwed up world these days. :(

    Feel free to ask
If people want to wave, that’s fine by me.

I just see it as an acknowledgement that they like my taste in mods....or I’m just that good looking. Gotta give the people what they want...

When I had a big basket on the roof, I got waved at a lot! Even Jeeps, other SUV's and even an attractive girl in a BMW once (not sure why I remember this specifically, but I'm pretty sure it made my day :D).

I assume the reason I got more waves with the basket is because it was much easier to notice than the other mods. :notsure:

Several Amish folks in horse-drawn buggies waved to me when I was driving around in Amish country Ohio. That was nice. I waved back. I don't know if it had anything to do with my 4Runner.

I think if the Wrangler/CJ came out today we would not have the jeep wave. It originates from a time when it was a niche vehicle, so Jeep owners would wave to fellow enthusiasts. Its like buying a Rolex, you don't just buy a Rolex, you buy it because your into that kind of thing.

That is how early CJ and Wranglers were, anyone willing to put up with a CJ or YJ did so because they liked the vehicle or they used it in work. Now that jeep has a wider appeal, I doubt the Jeep wave would become a thing if the CJ or Wrangler was released today because it attracts much more than the hard core enthusiast who established the practice.

The 4runner started off like how the Wrangler is now. Its buyers are diluted with non-enthusiasts who are buying them in 2wd to use as a family vehicle, they wouldn't play along with a 4runner wave and it would never become wide spread. Also we don't want to copy Jeep, that is a Jeep thing and I'll leave that for them.

Every time, me and some buddies rolled up on some jeep dudes, stuck, we would all joke "guess they didnt wave", was a little joke with a few of us, that all got it. That, or, they didnt have the right "jeep" bummer stickers/enough decals....

Edit- then, we would help where we could, to help the situation. Good times.

Haha! I remember those days. You gotta be pretty flexible to unhitch everything and drop trou with one hand while operating the throttle. Unless you were the passenger!

Maybe I’m stuck up, but I choose my waves carefully. If I see a well modded Runner I’ll wave and usually get one in return or vice versa.

I also do the same when I see older Land Cruiser’s. When I had the FJ I would get a lot of FJ waves and will get some from time to time.

I don't wave because most of the 4runner driven by lady drivers around here. I don't think it's a safe idea for me been a south Asian looking guy to wave.

Probably respect that you were in a vehicle with a design almost as old as theirs.

Used to wave to and get waves from FJs during the first couple months I had mine(2006). Pretty rare in my area at the time and mostly bought by enthusiasts. Died out once people started buying them for being "cute".

Usually the guys in the Jeeps are waving to try to get you to stop and give them a tow. When you have a 4Runner mechanical problems are very rare so there is no need to wave.

Back when I drove an FJ40, every FJ40 owner would wave even here in busy California. The 4runner owners don't wave as there is no camaraderie as the vehicle type is too common. On the trail, I wave to everyone with 3/4 waving back.

I’ve waved to modded 4Rs in Minneapolis area or on the road, usually it’s on the highway so I doubt anyone saw it. Back where I live in Alaska everyone on the island waves to each other, it’s becomes a habit and I get weird looks whenever I come down south and wave at cars :D Not trying to be like keep, but it’s nice to have some camaraderie among the modified 4Runner enthusiasts !
