Anyone know the purpose of the black plate on my 2021 Limited below the Toyota logo?

    Lol

It’s your license plate bracket. But I’d recommend using the zip ties and not drilling into it

It’s because it’s made for Japanese license plates. They’re much narrower. So if you put your license plate over that bracket - use zip ties to secure it to the grille behind and no issues.
Also, don’t worry about any subsequent PCS malfunction alarms

Ahhh yes that annoying feature that prevents you from moving people out of the left lane...thank you.

Is it this ugly on all models?

Yep its that ugly on a SR5 all the way up to Pro. Makes me sort of wish I had bough a 2019 I think was the last model year before that this nonsense.

I find it pretty nice to have for long highway trips. I'm lifted and everything, it's been good for me. The only annoyance is you need a different bull bar for your hybrid bumpers to clear it. Easy fix tho.

My girlfriend’s rav4 has no such ugliness and she has the same feature. 4Runner engineers were lazy.

I know... the fuel mileage is inexcusable, too. And - the archaic transmission? Like come on, Man! what is this? year 2005?

I’ll trade reliability for gas mileage in a vehicle like this but no excuses for ugliness even in an off-roader IMO

Does your state require a front plate? I doubt that anything that comes to the US would not have provision for a front plate ... if required. Depends on your location I would think. Mine's a '19 and came with this plate mount. Fits OR. plates perfectly. I honestly can't say if it came from Japan that way or if it was added at the port.

That said, I'm pretty sure that that area under the "hamburger" is not meant to mount a front plate. Ain't a place yas want to mount a plate.

Yea it's not, they are giving the OP a hard time as it's the TSS Radar.

Not for nothing, but it's 2021. There's no reason one can't have BOTH. Or at least in a modern vehicle.

I mean, I get that a 2021 is running a 2005 drivetrain, but the next gen better be damn impressive in economy and power if it wants to compete.

Who cares? This never shows everything anyway.
Does it? Because if it doesn't break down until 400,000 miles later and conquers terrain like nobody's business then I'm good, and it looks like lots of people are good with that, too, what with how many are being sold, even if they don't ever leave pavement.

I will gladly give up the gas mileage if it is reliable as they say it is and from what I read here. This has got to be a cash cow for Toyota. All their tooling/equipment etal has been paid for for years and with minor tweaks each year they rake in the cash. When is the last time you saw an advertisement on TV or elsewhere for a 4Runner? These things sell themselves from what I can tell. As the old saying goes if ain't broke don't fix it. Just my opinion though.

I won't be a powerhouse. Look at the 22R, then the 22RE. Toyota, even going back to the beginnings of the US market has engines that don't make enough power to hurt themselves. That usually means reliable. I mean seriously this motor has more displacement than the 3.5L ecoboost which made 2x the power. It's not a surprise they run for 400k miles. Overbuilt and underpowered is literally their strategy.

Makes sense, Ford only tested the 3.5 eco to 150k. Sounds about right, then trade it off for another.

What's interesting, at least it's a matte finish on the 2021's. The 2020's, it's totally shiny.

    Cheers,
