PCS went bonkers today 4/3/21 | Toyota Safety Sense Calibration

    I turned off all the PCS stuff day 1. I hate it. The warning will still come on when you are about to kill someone, but no braking. I have the Eibach springs on the Pro and have no idea if it affected it because mine is off. So basically I've given you no useful info in this post.

    I like the way you roll! Turned off the PCS immediately, removed the hideous pro roof rack and replaced the Pro exhaust! You da man!

    Yes I definitely did all those things. The best part of a 2020 is the CarPlay and JBL. I also removed the stock springs. Its barely a Pro anymore in a good way to me.

    I do like the Pro! I just admire his (Dallas TRDPro) audacity to change it as he sees fit! I don't own one yet and may never own one, but from day one I have never liked the Pro roof rack and would remove it. I see no need to turn off the PCS - I hope! I will not know about the Pro exhaust drone until I am in the saddle, but don't anticipate a problem with that! I plan to keep it stock for the most part (remove the roof rack and add pizza cutters for tires).

    250 plus mile trip today in all kinds of traffic conditions. At least 2 dozen engine starts. Not one time did safety sense not work on start-up, and it functioned as designed in every respect. Lane departure, cruise, even(unintentionally) got the beeps and red brake light illumination in the dash(system was set on lowest sensitivity level). I can't imagine what went wrong a few days ago or why it decided to start working again?

    Yeah I'm not one of those people that would try to make a vehicle look like the top trim. However, I don't mind removing things that I don't like from the top trim. Hated the rack from day I saw it in pics. Traded straight up for black rails. Will add some aftermarket crossbars at some point. Hated the exhaust from the 1st week when I drove it to Moab. Found a 2021 with 8K miles less so I swapped it straight up. Didn't hate the stock Pro suspension, but wanted a small lift and level which Eibach had to run 285's which is the perfect look to me. I made the Pro exactly what it should have been from the factory. Toyota should pay me for my modification ideas. If they did that then it would really set the Pro part from the lesser trims. Very happy with the results. The 4R is by far my favorite vehicle I've ever owned. The only other thing I would do is make it a hybrid.

    I turned it off in the instrument cluster. Like I mentioned the only thing that is still activated is the collision warning, but with no braking. I don't think that can be turned off.

    Final post on the TSS incident. I hope.....

    The TSS problem came out of nowhere and for no explainable reason it continued to be inoperative for 3 days(almost to the hour). On day 3 of the TSS being inoperative - while on a short trip to town - the problem cleared itself. All warning lights went off and full function returned to the TSS. A few days after the problem cleared itself I decide to go ahead with the lift I had previously scheduled. The truck was lifted(2" front/1.25"rear)and realigned. No TSS issues have been noted as a result of it being lifted.

    Chalking this one up to gremlins. :notsure:

    Seems like the two most common Pro shortcomings is the exhaust and roof rack. Other than that it's good.
    I don't think it would fit in my garage with the rack.

    I like both. I use the exhaust note to my advantage. It keeps me in touch with the motor. The rack is only as good as how one intends to use it. I find it to be perfect for my intended use.

    As the old saying goes. Different strokes for different folks.

    I’m with ya brother. And I don’t even have it yet. I think the roof rack is badass and the exhaust note is just fine. If I wanted a quiet luxury SUV, I’d just buy one. If anybody asks about the droning noise I’ll be like this a truck...deal with it :D

    Quite the contrary. A good friend of my sisters travels and trains techs at body shops around the country on how to calibrate them. They are millimeter specific, from what I’ve been told. But yes you are correct. Minor changes shouldn’t be too bad. But a lift...‍♂️

    I asked a friend at Caliber Collision about my coming lift this week for the wifes 4Runner. Going to hook me up for an adjustment when I’m done. The use a company called Protech

    I’m hoping a few hundred will do it. But the the dealer would be $1000, if his quote is accurate.

    A grand? That's a polite way of saying we don't want to be bothered, or we do it so seldom we'll get it right, if we get lucky, but it may take ALL day. What if a truck is taken to a dealer, but is showing no signs of being inoperative. Who knows what they may....or may not do? If ya get my drift. It's working fine.....that'll be a GRAND. It's okay, call me cynical.

    Cynicism is precisely who I learned to work on things myself. Lol! It’s also why I really appreciate my 04’ Tacoma. Power windows, check. Power locks, check. Excellent!

    I had a very similar thing happen to me. While doing 70mph in the passing lane (the left lane!) on a 65mph hwy, as I approached a car in the right lane that was slowing down to exit into a right turn lane, and even though there was nearly an empty lane between us, my PCS activated and slams on my brakes as I was passing the slowing right turning vehicle. If someone was behind me, or I was pulling a trailer, I would have been in serious trouble. I quickly figured out how to turn off the PCS. Also I experience downshifting while using the DRCC (Dynamic Radar Cruise Control) aka "adaptive cruise control" with pavement color changes (not always), and before an incline of a hill. Even small hills with little incline. For just an instant, it thinks the incline is a vehicle. Also while passing it sometimes slows down like the car well to the right is in front of me. Hopefully this can be corrected. I'm taking it to the dealership for service.

    It certainly gets ones attention. Since mine mysteriously started working again(on its own) there have been no recurrences of bad behavior, and I make a point of keeping it 'activated'. Do I trust it? Nope!

    Will be interesting to hear how your service department responds to your report. Keep us posted, and good luck.

    Agree. I had to dial down my sensitivity level . it was coming on way too often.

    Well, the dealer tested everything and found nothing wrong. Claims there is no adjustments for aiming the sensors and that it is very sensitive intentionally to catch something coming from the side. The tech was extremely nice and appeared to really want to help, claiming the only thing they could do was to put a case in with Toyota and see if they do anything about it in the future. They acted like this is the first time they have ever heard of the problem. I turned it back off. But if others do not, wow, I can see a major lawsuit from a jackknifed trailer, or from being hit in the rear or even a heart attack. Sudden brakes at 70 mph scared me enough to never want to experience that again. Oh well, useless feature for me.

    Ah ha!!! This is what I get for not reading the OM.........until now:oops:

    page 259

    "Conditions under which the system may operate even if there is no possibility of a collision"

    In some situations such as the following, the system may determine that

    there is a possibility of a frontal collision and operate.

    • When passing a vehicle or pedestrian

    • When changing lanes while overtaking a preceding vehicle

    • When overtaking a preceding vehicle that is changing lanes

    • When overtaking a preceding vehicle that is making a left/right turn

      Live and learn or.......if we live we learn.;)
    EDIT: I'm yet to understand why the system would not reset as per the instructions and instead, gave me a "take it to the dealer" notification. Tho, it cleared itself 3 days later and 'has not' acted up since. I simply:notsure:

    I've figured out in cases like this that if a car ahead is turning and is well out of my way I can simply hold the gas pedal and it won't alert or auto-brake.

    Try this: set the adaptive cruise and have it follow someone to maintain distance. Then, while it's keeping the distance, leave the cruise engaged and accelerate to close to the gap. Once you've closed up the gap (say, one-car length remaining), let off the gas... It'll start braking hard. This tells me you can override the adaptive cruise auto brake in situations you're comfortable with.

    Now when I have cruise set and I'm approaching someone exiting down a long, gradually turning exit ramp that tends to irritate PCS, I gently apply power and avoid the sudden PCS braking.
