I have a 2018 TRD Off Road. I was wondering if anybody has put a TRD Pro roof rack on in place of the standard rails/crossbars.

Yes, they go up for sale on this site periodically. I took mine off and sold it here. It's not a hard install

What did you put on in place of the OEM Pro rack. What I really want is to be able to get cross bars further forward, but cannot find info on how to do that without drilling holes.

I have a Gobi. I'm not sure if this is what you mean by getting your cross bars further forward, but this rack comes with cross bars that you can move along it's entire length. Just be advised, they are expensive and take several months to come in from time of purchase. Mine took 4 months and 10 days

Check out this post for a decent bit of info on this rack as well as other possibilities

Did you have to drill holes for the forward feet? Thanks

No, front feet just stick on. The middle and rear feet bolt into the existing holes. There are several other options as well that do not require drilling

I've also looked at the GOBI rack but don't really care for the industrial look and having to even pay more for the moonroof attachment; but I'm still open to the idea. So does a RTT fit inside the basket then? Looking at those additional crossbars, they don't seem to be beefy enough to support a tent. I like the Frontrunner but I don't want the added height or to be drilling into my roof (at least not on my new 2020 T4R. Lately I've been looking at either the Prinsu or upTOP Overland's full racks without the drilling. Anybody got some insight on either of these two; PROS/CONS?

I believe that the max load rating of the TRD pro basket is 120lbs. The crossbars on the rack are unfortunately not the strongest, and I wouldn't trust a tent up there. I just put a Rhino Rack pioneer platform on my 4Runner and absolutely love it. The RR platform doesn't require any drilling and it's super stable (I have a 180lb tent on top with no problems). I don't have any experiences with other brands, but I've heard that people love the Prisnu racks.

Will the tent be on the rack full time? Do you anticipate needing to clean your roof? With the Prinsu, rhino rack back bone, or Frontrunner it may be difficult to get under the rails to clean the roof. The Rhino Rack RLT 600 system should allow you to mount directly to the OEM mounts without reducing access to the roof itself. With the Gobi, I wasn't a fan of needing to mount the tent on top of of crossbars that are definitely more unstable than mounting directly to a rack itself. The addition of a tent on top of crossbars also affects clearance more than mounting directly to the rack.

If you want to use your existing 5th gen roof rails, you can buy aluminum extruded crossbars from TNutz, then these brackets from NiseRack, and put together a sturdy good looking rack system. And it’s not very expensive. Plenty strong for a RTT. Check out the FAQ page for how to order the crossbars.

that’s nice. Do you know the weight it holds? Like would it be stable enough for a 150lb rooftent?

With four bars you will safely distribute the weight as mentioned by Snickel Fritz. Toyota specs something like 130 pounds on two of their plastic flexy bars, so four aluminum ones should be a whole lot better for weight handling. The designer is actually in the process of acquiring a 5th Gen rack to rig up with the four bar system and test it to failure to see how much weight it will support. That should be an interesting video.

In the thread linked below there’s at least one guy who installed a RTT successfully on the NiseRack. 6896A26F-65EB-4F64-BC7F-4D6DD4429DB5.jpg

Hi, I'm Jason designer of the NiseRack. To answer one of your questions, one cross bar with my bracket will easily support 250 pounds with just a little deflection in the bar. The magic question is how much weight will the whole assembly hold? That's a great question and one I hope to answer soon. As Electroboy mentioned I'm working on getting a rack to do some destructive testing on and hope to do that soon.

Also, I've not had any orders originate from this site so I'm offering a 20% discount to the first three orders that originate from here. Use code 4Runners.com when you check out.

Any update on weight, and is the code still working?

Unfortunately it's not. I got 3 orders that used the code already. Destructive testing is still on my list of things to do as well.

Thanks for the update, got a RTT on its way for the taco, plan to set up the runner to also use it.

I know there is at least one person with a 23zerop roof top tent mounted on a "NiseRack". Based on his feedback it worked out well.

I have no problem accessing the site. On my phone browser I go to
    https://www.niserack.com/

Click on the 3 horizonal bar thingy.
    Click on “Shop”.
    Choose you bar combo, etc.

Does it work for you now?

Really interesting and simple design. Love it. Definitely looking forward to the testing.

Had a quick idea about deflector. Instead of making something crazy, maybe a rubber flap that locks into the front T and goes down to the roof. Found a random picture on google thats about 40% of what im talking about haha.

Hmmmm... As long as it’s stiff enough not to flutter at high speeds. And maybe a softer rubber strip where it contacts the roof paint. Go for it!

before throwing money at this - take a gander at the Yakima blades. For about $450 you can get a VERY sturdy roof rack that makes zero noise and is super easily removable. I'd strongly recommend sticking with stock roof rack rails as Toyota engineers who designed it knew a thing or two about the benefits of using the materials that they did and the overall design (think galvanic corrosion, think proper sealing, think shock absorption). Cross bars are the weak point on the stock system. So, cross bars like Yakima aero blades is what you need. I've taken mine off-roading on pretty rough terrain, and had three people sleep in the tent and experienced absolutely zero issues. Best part, they are super easy to remove when not on use so you can still enjoy the stock system and the ability to wash your roof properly.

Also, if you look at the picture posted above, and imagine putting a load on the forward part of that roof top tent (which most people would do) and then imagine the car rocking side to side as it would while off-roading. Front feet are not bolted in, they just provide support from load above. So, your roof rack mounts are literally being twisted from the forward sway.

Thanks for pointing that out. There's something glitchy going on as that has never happened before. I looked on my Ipad and sure enough, you're correct. I'll figure out how to fix that.

I assure you, my racks work better than my website... LOL

Id go with the Canadian company Greenlane offroad shippong is 1 flat rate no matter how much you buy its not by weight.

I have their ladder and 7/8 roofrack sent to hawaii withe shipping for 1300 and didnt have to wait long either like gobi and others.

Plus, tha ladder is strong and light u dont have to change out the rear hatch hydraulic arms so that it will open. Its flawless and easy i stsall

I just received my 3 piece set from Niserack today along with my crossbars from TNUTZ , installation was a breeze and everything fit together very nicely on my 2021 TRDOR, this makes for one one very solid rack at an affordable price. This will easily hold a roof top tent.
Another benefit of this design is that since you are not drilling or bolting on to the existing roof holes on the 4runner , there is no risk of developing leaks as happens with some aftermarket racks.

I wish I looked into it more if the lead times were less. If our northern brothers open up soon I might just go pick up the ladder. It looks real good.

Genuine question… how the hell do you clean your roof with all the full size racks installed?? I’m looking into buying a full rack but looks like the roof will never be clean again if I do… unless I take it off each time haha
