DEAL REACHED TO HIKE CALIFORNIA MINIMUM WAGE TO $15 AN HOUR

getting raised to almost $10 here in CT this year, i don't think people understand the effects of drastic changes like this on the economy

 

i couldn't be more disappointed with my state and Americas recent war with success. The entitled youth generation is so screwed once they figured out what they've done.

 

Why can't people understand this doesn't fix anything? You'll have more money but with higher taxes or whatever you'll still be equally poor. Within a year we'll have bitching for $20 an hour. Quit complaining for things and work harder for what you want.

what will the value of $15 be in 2022? Minimum wage jobs should only be a stepping stone to something better in life , making it more comfortable or attractive to stay at the bottom doesn't help people in the long run ....

 

What's that sound..? It's not the wind blowing. It's the sound of businesses packing up and hauling ass to Nevada.

 

By no means am I a hard worker, but damn, if I worked min wage and was unhappy and always broke, that would just be a wake up call to go finish school or something. If I work a low end job I wouldn't go and complain till I get paid as much as a lawyer or whatnot.

As if the housing market in sf wasn't already ridiculous. In a few years $1.5m won't even get me a 1 bedroom.

Why don't people understand?

Here it is in very simple math.

You own a business that has 60 dollars per hour to pay its employees with. You need to hire at least 5 employees to run so you hire 5 and pay them each 12 dollars per hour (2 dollars over the minimum wage).

This plan is put into effect. The min wage goes to 11 and you are unphased since you pay more than that. After 2 years the min wage has caught up with your wage. After it increases above 12, you can no longer afford to pay your employees.

This doesn't just result in the business going under, it also results in your and your 5 employees unemployment.

 

so so true. my first two jobs were small business with a single owner and if minimum wage made a $5 jump we would have lost half the staff, regardless of value

I don't understand how people don't all agree on this. It's just basic math. If you can divide, you should get it...

My fellow college students are the only people who think this is a good idea. It because they have been coddled their whole life.

I have fellow Econ students who think this is a good idea. They should lose their degree for lack of understanding of the first theory you learn in the major...

 

Mist college kids are f'ing retards that showed just enouph the system passed them to get rid of them. There still educated ignorant kids when they leave. A few small few actually really learn anything in college anymore and those that do are specialized in science or a skilled trade. Not many Arts majors come out educated anymore from what I have been seeing over the last ten years.

This is horrible news for all of us. Minimum wage jobs are not suppose to be a career. It is suppose to be a start for our youth or a finish for us old folks. This is not good people and if you think it is you will have a rude awakening coming.

 

After I left the Canadian Army I took a course in small craft design. In 1960 I got a job in Stamford, Conn. with a great designer and a fine man, starting at $100 weekly. At the end of my first week he raised me to $110. Six years later I was making $180, and never once had to ask him for a raise. In late '66 I set up my own business but still did work for my old boss, and eventually I had my own clients all over the world. But it takes hard work and study, no matter what profession or trade you're in. - Ted

 

Our youth could learn a lesson or two from you Ted. Mid 70's I was making $1.80 per hour and happy to have a job. Worked hard and received a 10 cent raise within 6 months. Worked 2 jobs through High School to help the family make ends meet. Never complained just happy I could help.

 

I know things can be damned tough for far too may folks. My mum worked in the Hamilton cotton mills for many years, running 2 , even 3, looms 6 days a week during WW2. And my very first job was as time clerk on a 5 -1/2 day week at Int'l Harvester for $24. But I should add that I rarely worked a 40 hour week at the shipyard either. I put in lots of Saturdays and Sundays talking to clients about maintenance, repairs, haulouts, etc. and, when we were designing and building the America's Cup Race yacht, 'American Eagle', a 50-60 hour week was not uncommon. But, damn, I loved every minute! It was a great life as my boss, Bill Luders, worked right beside me, and taught me so much. - Ted
