Hi everyone! I am first-time 4Runner owner, but have always wanted one. I purchased a new 2021 TRD Off Road Premium in Barcelona Red just last week. I knew exactly what I wanted, did a quick inventory search, and luckily found one locally. I am loving it so far!

I have a couple of questions... the owner’s manual doesn’t give much in the way of info on break-in period. Some say not to worry about it, others swear by following certain procedures for the first x-miles. Any suggestions on what to do/ not to do during the first miles? When do you suggest first oil change? Early, or wait for maintenance schedule?

Also, I have noticed a slight clicking noise seemingly coming from somewhere around the steering wheel/ column only on first start-up when the vehicle hits a few MPH; like pulling out of my driveway. It only happens once, then never again for the duration of the drive, but then clicks again after I start it up and drive. Sorry for the vague description, but any idea what that may be? Any other owners experience something similar?

Thanks in advance for any and all input! This seems like a great forum and community, and I am excited to be a part of it.

Loving the new ride so far!

    Pat

    Nice choice on trim model

I took it easy for the first couple of thousand miles. I did my first oil change at 5k.

As for your clicking, I’m not sure what that is.

You sure you're not hearing the doors automatically locking? They do that at a few MPH. Mine does it when backing out of the driveway.

Thanks! I am enjoying it so far. I will do the oil at 5k also most likely. Dealer says 10k, but that makes me nervous... ha!

I have the doors set to lock when I shift from park. It’s a very subtle clicking sound just as the truck starts to move after starting up. Maybe I’ll try to record it. I’m sure it’s nothing! Just getting used to the new ride.

Thank you! I certainly will be getting her dirty, but after a couple thousand miles... I’m neurotic about breaking in easy. Lol

Congrats on your purchase! I also have a 2021 TRD ORP. This may be helpful from the Owner's Manual.

None. Bone Stock. EXCEPT: Brushguard, tow hitch, both welded to the frame. It's good to have friends and a fully equipped garage!
    Welcome to te forum!
Nice looking rig. Treat her (him?) right, and he'll last you forever.
I bought my 87 pickup in 88, and still have it. It's still solid, too. Bought my 87 4Runner in 98, to cart my 5 kids around. Still have it, although it has a small bit of trouble, atm.
Treat it right, break it in right, keep up on the maintenance, and it'll last forever. Barring stupidity of other drivers :D

    Enjoy it, Pat!

Congrats and greetings from a former Bergen County guy, now in South Carolina! I followed Go Slow’s post pretty close. I did get an oil change at 1000 even though my dealer thought I was nuts. Enjoy your new ride.

Congrats on the rig and welcome. As per the above, this is the recommended break in procedure. I also agree with doing the first oil change no later than 5k miles. I’ve done that with all my new cars. Usually actually around 1000-1500 miles. Can we prove that increases the longevity of your engine? No, but it seems like one of those better safe than sorry things.

The other thing in this vein that I’ve always done is to make sure the engine experiences periods of significant back pressure during the break in period. You can do this while complying with the recommended break in procedure. An example would be periods of moderate acceleration on the highway followed by completely taking your foot off the gas, letting the truck coast down by 10 or 15 mph or so. Then back on the gas to accelerate back up to speed, then back off again.

I can’t prove this helps either. But it makes sense that back pressure helps to seat the rings etc, which reduces future oil consumption. This is a known break in technique I’ve seen recommended by engine mechanics. I’ve done this with several new cars, including cars known for oil consumption, and ended up with literally zero measurable consumption between oil changes (after the first one).

    Best of luck with it!

Thank you for the input! I really appreciate your advice. I'll be getting on the highway this afternoon then... I'll probably do the first oil a bit early also.

Thanks so much! We are looking forward to many adventures together.
