Any speculation on what Toyota plans on introducing when they cease Land Cruiser sales in the US after the 2021 model year? Toyota's official press release is cryptic that something is on the horizon.

The Toyota Land Cruiser has been a legendary name for more than 60 years. While it will be discontinued in the United States after the 2021 model year, we remain committed to the large SUV segment and will continue to explore future products that celebrate the Land Cruiser's rich off-road history. We encourage loyal enthusiasts and intrepid adventurers to stay tuned for future developments.

Probably a reboot of the Landcruiser in a year or 2.

Hopefully a return to the fj40 days, their discontinuation announcement hinted at that. I didn't like the way Toyota positioned the Land Cruiser, and I am happy to see it go as long as they have a good replacement in the works that is more affordable.

Provided it actually makes it to market and remains viable, the Rivian is looking like a decent alternative to the Cybertruck or Hummer

I think we're aways out from electric becoming the standard for off-roading. They might be good for a day trip at this point, but not actual traveling.

Although, I would guess you're half joking. :notsure:

    Feel free to ask
If there’s a LC reboot more in tune with its roots, as Toyota seems to be implying, and pricing comes down quite a bit from the current LC, I’ll be all in.

The 4Runner owns the 40-50k market, but the Sequoia, GX460 owns the 60-70k market. The problem is that a Landcruiser would step on that market, and canalize those sales.

Personally, they can kill of the Sequoia for all I care and stick the LC there...or revamp the Sequioa to be less gigantic and heavy, add some of the LC tech such as MTS, Crawl, Turn Assist, KDSS and just sell the TRD Pro Sequoia.

I don’t think you’re going to see a direct replacement. The LC is continuing in the rest of the world, and we have the Sequoia still is the big SUV so Toyota “remains committed” to the large SUV segment as-is.

From Toyota: "will continue to explore future products that celebrate the Land Cruiser’s rich off-road history. We encourage loyal enthusiasts and intrepid adventurers to stay tuned for future developments."

Maybe they aren't talking about the LC in the last sentence. But the Sequoia, even in TRD form, sure isn't what I would call a good off road vehicle. I'm reading between the lines. If Toyota was going to kill off one name plate it would be beyond stupid to kill of the Land Cruiser one in favor of the Sequoia. It would be wiser to move the LC down market and kill the Sequoia than to keep the Sequoia and kill the LC. Toyota deserved every year of poor Land Cruiser sales, it was horribly positioned and under marketed.

Itll be interesting to see what problems crop up with electric trucks out on the trail. Lose one of the independent motors on one of the wheels and thatll be a real shitty trail repair.

I figured. Honesty, an electric drivetrain could make for a really badass 4×4 without having differentials and driveshafts hanging down. I could see it being a huge advantage in the long run.

Remember the instantaneous & monstrous amounts of torque electric vehicles can produce. It would be interesting to see how many "modes" you could have. Crawl (granny low & tons of torque), highway (full power & speed) etc...
I am excited to see what comes of these vehicles!

What's interesting is that at least from a size perspective, the 5th gen T4R is similar to the 80-Series LC, and the LC just got huge and kind of priced itself out in the process. The Sequoia feels a lot closer currently to a Suburban/Yukon/Expedition than a true off-road vehicle. And with Lexus selling a lot more GX's and LX's than Toyota does LC's and Sequoias, I can see toyota's position to remove it but personally I'd rather see the lexus brand stick with the luxury "passenger/road" vehicles and Toyota to keep the off-road stuff with the LC. Having a TRD Pro Sequoia at $65k doesn't make sense to me when you could get a well optioned Lexus GX for the same price. If Toyota could work to get the LC to start closer to $70k versus $85k, and not have a Sequoia, it would be a lot more successful IMO.

I just saw a newer LC the other day. It reminded me more of a 3rd Gen 4R than any other model 4R..

    Just sold the wife’s 2019 LC200 she drove the BMW way more than her LC200 , I have had 2018 , 2019 and my 2020 LC 200 .
The prices are insane , I know I sold and also took trade , I got 95k trade value for the wife’s was pretty good considering I paid 78k for that one … I paid that for my 2020 also just before covid kicked in they could not give land cruisers away .
This year with all the shortages and LC 200 being discontinued created a feeding frenzy for these over priced trucks.
I love my 2020 LC 200 but is far from the heritage the Land cruiser came from , I hate the touch screen , not a fan of the constant all wheel drive , transmission 8 speed shifts weird and way over priced IMO .
I took a big check and another new vehicle , I did not want to loose the trade value so I took my time and shopped the LC 200 around til I found the deal I was happy with .
I took a big check and 2021 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon Diesel in army green … I’m not hear to rave about Jeep , I still own 3 Toyotas including my new TRD Pro 4runner , I have to say the diesel Jeeps are pretty awesome .
Straight axle , manual 4x4 selector , Diesel engine and the transmission is pretty impressive , they really got that right .
Not sure the longevity of the Italian diesel , it is the 3rd gen version , hopping they worked out the bugs , I did get the extended warranty really cheap for what thats worth .
My local dealer called me out of the blue last week with a 4runner TRD Pro in lime , the price was right , not my first color choice .
My buddy has a new Bronco , I like the looks but the 4runner is way better choice if you plan on keeping it more than 3 yrs .

I hate the old grill and the new one … Takes a lot of dough to convert one to mild overland vehicle , I had all the parts to 3” lift BP51 , Budbuilt skid plates and sliders , TJM and Slee rear bumpers , Total Chaos arms and links … 20k + just to make a LC200 more user friendly …
I have 2020 LC 200 could not and would not do this again … and I have the means , if your going to off-road why buy a 100k + vehicle , its not the best vehicle to convert .
4runner is a way better plate form and budget friendly .
    Thats just my 2 cents
