I follow a ton of Instagram 4R fanatics. This one one in particular that has quite the following, I will leave him unnamed, but every time I see that 4Runner, all I see is a side show attraction. Obviously personal preferences.... however, what do you guys think? Can one do too much to a 4Runner?

To each his own. I prefer simplicity and add-on's that provide function. I don't tend to be showy.

I found myself writing way more than I wanted to here so I’ll keep it simple, yes.

4Runners are so much more capable than people understand. A lot of people willing to spend copious amounts of money for flare. My $0.02

edited: remember, most of the time Instagram influenced usually make that a full time job. Got to spend money to make it

I'll refrain from judging others choices.

    As for myself.

My build - will be to suit - my needs.

Instagram is full of broverlanders. It’s a business for companies to promote their products, and for users to make money from posting. Plenty of them actually use their rig, plenty of them venture to the beach and that’s about as much off roading as they do. As stated though, to each his own.

Yes, most of the ones I follow have lots of fun off-road...frequently... I will have to wait until I retire in a few years and move away from flat America back to the mountains in the NW.

I mean, if they got the money, then go for it. Mine is my daily driver and I’d never use half the shit they deck them out with.

There's a fine line between an appropriate, useable build and poseureish asshattery.

A lot of people don't understand that and spend money they don't have on a truck they don't use to impress people they don't know.

To be fair at least that guy (and I've been that guy) tried it, didn't like it, got out from under it, and didn't parade it around on his DD like a flaccid roof cock...

After nearly two decades in Wranglers, the 4Runner social media builds have a lot of catching up to do.

Mine's mine. You do you. Personalization is just that.

Know what you think you want/need. Then. Research research research and research some more. Measure twice cut once. As the old saying goes.

I’m not one to tell others what to do with their monies. If you can afford it, go for it. Also, helps others learn from their mistakes.

When I first got my Toyota Trd Pro Tacoma I decided to check out some local Toyota 4 x 4 clubs to see what they had to offer .... I saw this thing online for a group that was semi local (45 minutes away) west valley here in Utah and they had a Saturday Morning Coffee Run get together So great! I got the location and headed there all like Yay! we should be able to get good information about trails, camping locations and even do some off road runs with these guys!

So when I got there I had a little bit of a sinking feeling .... My truck a Trd Pro was 6 to 8 inches lower than anyone there I did not have Super Charger or Turbo setup nor a massive pile of LED lights poking out of my grill I did not have a Winch on front and back Nor was I sitting high on 33 inch or 35 inch tires did not have a crazy mural painted on the hood big double Roof top tents on the back of some.. nor was my truck perfectly spotless clean (hit some mild muddy trails Friday night) these trucks must of had all of $60k or even more invested in them.

But I figured may just ask anyways a small group of guys standing in front of one of the trucks "so where you guys go off road at?" that question was met with silence and kind of a snobbish snicker laugh so I walked away
going to my truck some young Cambodian guy caught up with me that was standing at the back of that group and told me "Dude sorry for that back there" let me tell you something... They don't go off Road because they have so much money tied up in their trucks they don't dare do that besides none of them really know how to drive the real trails.. that is just their hobby like people with show cars.

But you want to go on trails I can show you some good ones then I saw his truck a red mud covered gold color 95 4Runner lots of dents in it a hitch receiver in front and back for his winch a shovel on his roof rack held in place with bungie cords next to a spare tire up there too and we hit some real trails it was awesome.
