I have seen some talk about maybe in 2023 there will be a new 4R. Looking at all the hybrids (gas engine and battery) that Toyota already has I would say they will go this route. They have hybrid Camry, Sienna, RAV4, Highlander, Avalon, Corolla and most likely the next Tundra. They are clearly putting there money on this type of drivetrain.

I saw where Bentley makes an SUV. It is about the size of a Tahoe. There are three versions. First one is 5.2 seconds 0-60 and 158 mph top speed, the second is 4.4 seconds 0-60 and 180 mph, the speed version is 2.8 seconds 0-60 and 190 mph top speed. They all the same type hybrid set up Toyota is using. Just to point out this is where things are going, even with cars like this. Oh, and they all get 25 mpg.

Because of this I believe the new 4R will be this type hybrid. I drove the neighbors Highlander the other day and I was impressed. It drove very nice and was not lacking in acceleration. It is a hybrid and has a 0-60 of 7.2 seconds, and gets 34 mpg on the road and 35 in town and a combined of 35 mpg.

With is exact same set up I think the 4Runner could get over 30 mpg! The highlander weighs within 100 lbs of the current 4R, the tires total diameter of the Highlander are equal to the tires on the 4R. The 4R sits a little higher. The transmission will be different. I am just pointing out why I believe 30+ mpg for the new 4R is doable. If it is like the rest of the hybrids Toyota has it will have more hp and torque than the current V6 they use.

I do not drive a 4R at this time but I will surely look very close at a new one when they get into production if it comes out like this. JMHO

I heard there'll be a name change if all you point out comes true. It'll be rebadged the PriRunner. Bentley's are a dime a dozen around here, but I've never seen one off road.:mudding:

I am not saying the Bently is an off road vehicle, just a comment that these type hybrids are becoming more and more popular.

I think people need to either accept the idea of the 4R being a hybrid, or look to a different vehicle. For myself I really like the idea. Most likely more cargo weight and more towing capacity, along with the much better mpg. What’s not to like?

Just yanking your chain a bit. All in fun my friend. All in fun. I'm an Elon fanboy and have been from the beginning. He has survived what Tucker, Delorean and others could not.

OP jumped from ‘JMHO’ to ‘people need to either accept the idea of the 4R being a hybrid or look elsewhere’ pretty quick.

All just my opinion, maybe I should have worded that one differently.
