I just purchased my 2004 SR5 4Runner (4x4, V8 4.7L) a couple of weeks ago. On colder mornings, I noticed that the brake pedal would shudder and make a scraping and/or squealing sound when lightly pressed. At times, the gas pedal would create the noise when lightly pressed too. This would happen intermittently, and the noises do not affect ride quality. I caught the sounds on video:

Engine Bay View - ABS System (with timestamps)

    0:08
    0:14
    0:20
    0:25

While car is moving (with timestamps):

    0:45 Scrape sound
    1:14 Scrape sound
    2:12 Squeal sound
    2:37 Scrape sound
    3:10 Squeal sound

    While car is stationary

Services recently performed on the vehicle (within 2 weeks):
    • Brake pad replacement with rotor resurfacing
    • Timing belt/water pump/drive belt replacement
    • Flushed brake/transmission/transfer case/differential/power steering/coolant fluids

The mechanics I have consulted were unable to figure out the issue. They have inspected the brake system and have determined that there were no issues. Any insight would be much appreciated!

Even though you are not having any driveability problems now, sounds like the motor for you brake actuator is failing internally, specifically the pump. I would recommend trying to source a new one ahead of time, because they are very expensive, and would not recommend trying to overhaul.

In case you do not know, your truck does not have a vacuum assist to help stop the vehicle, there is a pump that increases pressure in the booster assy depending on pedal effort.

From the looks of it, the rear brake assist motor was replaced. It looks brand new. They probably use a cheap aftermarket part. If the brakes work, you might just have to live with the noise.

We Had one that went completely out( the ABS pump motor) It set off a squealing sound in the cab that was unbearable. Also the power breaks were gone. I ordered a used unit from ebay. I changed it out. It did fix the problem. The original motor was filled with brush dust. About a 1/4 cup of it. The brushes were near gone, but after cleaning, it may have worked a while longer.
