My wife and I took the plunge and bought a 2021 TRD Pro!!

We wanted an off-road capable vehicle, but didn’t want to mod out suspensions, tires, rims, etc.. So the Pro it was! So far we installed Westin Outlaw Series rock rails, are figuring out how dark to tint the windows, checking out front bumpers, and fighting over who gets to drive.

Can’t wait to hit the county roads and rip around!

I’m curious if anyone has experience/opinions on:

    - Would this truck be so much better with an 8-speed transmission?
    - Pedal Commanders | Worth it?
    - Superchargers? | I think I saw a few peeps on the YouTube with superchargers on their 4runners; Is that a common engine mod?
    - Do we really need a steel rear bumper? Pros/Cons?

Welcome, 8-speed tranny I can’t say for sure, Peddle Commander, i have been running mine for over a year and really like it. Supercharger, i would love to have one but $$$$$$ not in my budget, but it is the only way to add honest HP. Steel bumpers depends on how serious you are. This is all just my opinion, others will chime in I’m sure.

    congrats on the new ride!

    My opinions on questions asked:

No on transmission; One of the things I like about the 4Runner is the more predictable shifting. Sure an 8 speed can be smoother and potential for better mpg, but just one of the things I’d rather them not rock the boat on.

Pedal commander no; never felt the need for one myself.

Supercharger... nice to have... bur it’s a rather large expense. Not that common, likely due to the cost. If you off-road, it adds a lot of power off of idle which can help with crawling and hill climbs; if you drive a lot of highway, will give you more passing and merging power, but still keeps the high speed rpm’s lower (vs regearing). Though combination of regear and supercharge is a good pair. Also note, I’m more so referring to a roots style supercharger, like the magnuson. While you can still get good gains with a centrifugal supercharger (like a pro charger), it’s more in the upper band, so more so for top speed. A roots style is more off the line power, and I feel like it’s more daily driving and off road enhancing.

For rear bumper... If you do new wheels and tires, and opt for 5 matching; then I’d def recommend a steel bumper with a swing carrier for the spare. Underneath is a rough life for a spare, especially if you off-road. I’m personally not a fan of the hitch mount spare carriers, as you lose some amount of departure angle, and I’ve yet to ever see one in person that didn’t shake. Most bumpers will help you gain rear clearance as well. Cons though... are cost and weight. They’re not cheap, and you’ll likely need to add stiffer coil springs in the rear to offset the weight.

Those are just my opinions and thoughts though.

Tried the Pedal Commander and it worked as advertised. However, I found that between 40 and 50 mph, my foot got uncomfortable due to so little forward articulation of my foot. So I returned it and really didn't need it. I am older, so instant throttle is not something I crave.
