    Would prefer to keep the stock TRD wheels that came with the 4runner. Would like to get Raised White Lettering on new 285/70/17s, seems that only the BFG KO2 offers RWL in 285/70/17.

    • Will the stock TRD rim that came with the 265/70/17 fit a BFG 285/70/17?
    • Without any unnatural spacers etc? Anybody doing this?

    Longtime lurker since buying my 2018 Off-Road Premium Aug '18. Have spent far too much time looking at options trying to educate myself; and enjoy the forum.

    Looking to put slightly bigger tires than the stock 265/70/17 Nitto Grapplers, and maybe a 2-3" lift if I can ever decide on which manufacturer to go with.

    Appreciate any thoughts or comments!

    Thanks @Mtbpsych ! That was a fast reply! The lift is coming. I figured I only needed tires + lift but the shop I'm talking to quoted me wheels and is saying they're needed to make it all fit.

    Maybe its b/c I'm not that into wheels, but to me the stock wheels are just as cool as any of the aftermarket rims I see around. So for the extra $900, I'd like to keep my TRD wheels if they'll work.

    You could make those stock sema style wheels fit with the 285’s! I’ve seen multiple builds with that setup on Instagram and what not so I don’t see why it wouldn’t work! It is on the thinner side of wheels, so maybe someone else can chime in. I’m sure in order to be 100% safe and for liability on their end, they won’t put it on as I think it’s a 7” wide wheel.

    Yes you can. They’re 7” wide wheels, and 285/70’s aren’t recommended for 7” wheels, which is why most chain tire shops won’t do it. But people have been running 285’s on the TRD Pro wheels for 5 years now with no issues.
    if you are going E rated tires anyway, then get 275’s in the KO2’s and lift later. If not, you’ll need some minor trimming and a lift for the 285’s

    Is yours a 2018 TRD Offroad Premium? Do you still have your TRD Offroad wheels?
    TRD Offroad wheels meet the requirement to mount 285/70R17 tires.
    Yes since TRD Pro wheels are skinny they are not recommended for 285/70R17.
    If you want to keep TRD Pro wheels you don't have to settle for 275/70R17. You can go for a taller tire like 255/80R17.
    As far as I've seen 255s only got Load E, so onroad comfort would be compromised. In 275s you can have something like a Falken Wildpeak Load C. One of my buddies have them and it's good onroad.

    Thanks @kmeeg and yes mine is a '18 ORP. Original tires/wheels are on it (pic in post at beginning of thread). From your and others comments it seems the risk is that the stock TRP rims are on the narrower side, apparently 7", and most on here are saying that 285s "need" a rim that is 7.5" at the lower end of narrowness.

    So, while doable, what is the issue posed by a narrower stock rim of 7" on 285s?

    Is it a matter of fit on the vehicle, or an issue w/that narrower rim becoming a big problem if you go to air down and drop tire pressure?

    Just want to clear few things;

    1. According to the first pic on the post, looks to me that is a TRD Pro wheel. Not a TRD Offroad wheel.

    2. I do not know what is the reason why tire manufacturers state 7.5" minimum width wheels for 285/70R17. Not sure if it will loose a bead at low air pressure or for some sort of safety factor. I'd suggest you check the specs from the tire manufacturer site, not what tire seller tell you.

    3. Atleast fitment wise both my TRD ORP and Limited 285/70R17 did not rub on stock UCA or SPC UCA. I don't use any wheel spacers. My Limited has 2.5 lift front with stock UCA and 1.5in lift rear. My TRD ORP has 3in front with SPC UCA and 2in rear. On both of them I had rubbing on inner fender liner so I had to push that plastic forward.

    I'm not at all trying to say TRD Offroad wheels are the best for 285/70R17 tires. All I say is it just meet the minimum requirement by tire manufacture.

    Anyways I'm not an expert. I'm just a user just sharing my experience.. :)

    I just had some E load 255/80R17 Toyos installed, and the on-road comfort is actually quite awesome. Stock suspension, no lift (yet).

    A lot of guys run 285/70R17 on Pro rims even though at 7" wide they are supposedly too narrow per tire manufacturer recommendations. As far as I understand it, the problem running that size on Pro rims is that they have enough offset to cause rubbing even with a lift in many cases. OR/Trail rims are 7.5" wide but aren't offset as much, thus less likely to rub.

    rears seem high as it’s in drive way. I did 6 turns on drivers side and 5 turns on passenger. 23.5” fronts and 24” rears.

    Yeah I know, was just curious. I’m 6 on both sides, drivers settled .5”. Looking at what to bump them up to, maybe 10/8? Thanks for the info

    What’s your rears like ? 2”?

    I think 10/8 will fix the lean. 2.5 turns should be 1/2” which you want.

    Yeah 2” rears. I kind of dig the rake, but feel like I could get away with fixing the lean and going up a little more and still maintain some slight forward rake.

    Do any of you guys that move from stock 265s to 285s and a lift; experience a noticeable difference when you're sitting higher/more top heavy?

    Does it feel less secure or annoyingly top heavy?

    Come on man, you literally gain 0.5” of height from 285’s. And the lift does not make it top heavy. At some point you need to just start doing and stop over thinking. These forums can get counterproductive to a point.

    I'll concede the point as this is a known developmental area for me. Truth is, I was ready to pull the trigger and then my best friend threw a wet blanket on all my ideas telling me to leave it stock and blah blah blah. Appreciate all the feedback.

    All 3 of my 4runners lifted. I lift when they are factory fresh. I like a mild lift and 285/70R17s. They look soo good than stock 265s to me personally.

    Not at all, you will love the way it feels with new suspension, it performs on road much better than stock. It will not have the excessive lean in turns, and will get rid of the nose dive on braking. Off road goes without saying.

    Bigger A/T LT Tires, Slight Lift, Sliders, Rack, Lights, etc.
    Yeah these are all intelligent lifts. Go put a 5 inch lift on though, and that's a different story.
