There are so many companies out there that make rock sliders for our 4runners. Most of them have very good reviews and that was one of the reasons I picked Cali Raised sliders for my 4runner. Another reason is in the pictures it shows the optional top plates that have dimples in them for foot traction. It is nice to have with my lifted 4runner when I step in. I just finished installing them and shocked to see that stick out LESS then the factory ones. No room to put your foot on them. Why freaking bother with top plates and dimples if you cant use them?? Incredibly disappointed.

I mean, they’re not meant to be steps. Top plates can also prevent spray from hitting the body, looks cleaner, and can definitely be used as steps to reach the roof rack.
I don’t even like Cali Raised but this isn’t their fault. There are plenty of other options if you wanted flatter and wider sliders.
But that’s just my opinion. Take them off, sell them, do better research to buy the ones you want. Complaining isn’t going to solve the problem. Best of luck

Sliders are meant to be used for body protection not actually a step. Running boards are for stepping purpose.

Yeah that sucks they aren’t what you hoped. You do get a little more sticking out if you get straight sliders instead of sliders with the “bump out” I believe. Also the flatter the better if you want them for a step as well. Could always sell those and re order. You would take a bit of a hit I’m sure though.

    This post is ridiculous.

rock sliders ARE NOT side steps.

Also the picture shows more or a slider/step so maybe what you’d need.

Looks to me like they should be wide enough. Is the powder coating too slick to provide a decent grip? My Shrockworks sliders have a textured powder coat which provides just the right amount of grip. I doubt they are much wider than yours.

It might look funny but a bit of black skateboard tape strategically placed might go a long way.

To the guys who think my post is ridiculous, you can kiss my ass. If these are not meant to be stepped on then why in Gods name you dimple the top to have traction? Shit, why even offer top plates? Whats the point?

Funny, this is what they post under there "features"

0 Degrees for added stepping location. Makes accessing the roof or getting into the vehicle easier.

I have the "step" edition. It is strange, some pics show the runners sticking out further then others.

I feel you man, i can only stand on the outside rail on mine, but i knew this going in. I have the RSG angled with top plate, my thinking on the top plate was that it would help to block some debris that gets kicked up, and it does that pretty well. I was waxing the top the other day and it is a little tough till i get back to the kick out.F9C51EB7-5CF6-48A6-93C8-03F54AC85931.jpg

    Feel free to ask
    I feel ya OP.

The rear kickout is about the only decent stepping surface on my RCI sliders. I manage to somewhat make it work up front though. I did get them for protection, the step was just a plus, so I suppose I can’t really belly ache about them too much.

My Shrockworks stick out 3-7/8" from the same point (rocker panel), and are uniform from front to back. I have wide feet (4E) and they are plenty wide enough for me, but I still have to be careful with my footing when I exit the truck.

The reason there is more foot space on the oem running boards is because they are mounted lower, i know we all want to have as much clearance as possible but in my old feeble mind, if you want more room lower them down a little instead of out.

Here's a thought, OP. Locate a metal fabricator and have them look at your current setup and custom design/build sliders for you, incorporating your needs into the design. Then take of the current sliders and sell locally. You may not recoup your total expenses, but this way you are pretty much guaranteed to get exactly what you want.

I agree that it is frustrating to purchase something based on internet photos and recommendations only to be disappointed once you receive the product. You do have options, though.

Good luck. Let us know how you proceed.

Some are. These are advertised as Slidersteps and I'd put SLEE products against anything.

I am in the market for sliders right now since the wacko deer nailed me. Had custom ones on my old TJ, not so much for rocks but for armor against other things. Same reason I'm doing it now, but need them to stick out enough to be used as a step for the wife. Agree with OP, if the slider does not stick out past the body panel width of the car I'm not seeing the usefulness, let alone used as a step. I decided on Victory 4x4 and will get measurements from them before I buy. Maybe pure custom is way to go again.

I am also one of these guys. When I started researching 4R's and bought mine I looked the slider look much better and thought they would serve as a step also particularly for my Dad who is 80 and I plan to take fishing with me. However, after a lot of time reading on this forum and reading reviews of them I decided the OEM running board was the best for my purpose.

I wanted something that looked cool and also functional and thought the slider initally looked like a good option and I am not going to off road with my vehicle.

This is the unique thing about the 4R is that there are countless options for customizing it for ones needs, and its all a learning process.

Having same issue as the OP
Installed my RCI sliders with top plate a few days ago.
    Am happy with quality.
However, my wife says her foot slipped off getting in it; that it doesnt stick out quite far enough.
Not sure what can be done to the RCI's that will not involve hours of time and $$$
Happy wife, happy life, but she ain't happy right now. So I'm gonna have to come up with a solution.

The cali raised are def a bit narrow at the front door. They're also a little too high to be a good step. I got the top plates with bedliner and they are reasonably grippy. Mounted them dimples up. Step functions better when the front door is open too, allows your knees/body to be closer to the truck.
