Apologies if this has been discussed elsewhere, spent about 20 seconds searching and didn't see it...

Have a '16 LE with about 67k miles and recently the head unit goes dark (sometimes) when I'm in R. Other times the backup camera transmits perfectly to the HU. I don't see any other issues with the HU that make me worry that it's the piece conking out, and the camera seems fine when it does work (and I can't yet tell if there are specific instances that cause failure, like rainy Tuesdays between 8am and 11am). I'm guessing the connection is bad, but of course instead of checking it myself (or adding to the dealership owner's $$) I'm here crowdsourcing to see if any of you have similar experiences/solutions/better ideas.

I know this post is a little old, but I have the same problem with a 2014 4Runner Limited. Did you happen to find a solution? Thanks!

I know this is an old thread but I’m having intermittent issues with the backup camera on my 2015. Anyone else had this issue and resolved it?

    Oooh look, another mod.....
As listed above, it's probably not the camera, it's the head unit. Does it go out intermittently? If so, that's the head unit and/or the connector on the head unit.

It could possibly be the connection to the camera in the rear hatch.
If nothing is found at the head unit, I would check inside the hatch.
