    noticed a new accessory available in the “build your own” section—a touch keypad. Found this video: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=PsixlFLg9SA

    Wonder if it can be retrofitted? Would be great to have

    That is pretty cool if it works with regular keyed vehicles without the push button start. Be nice if you accidentally lock your keys in the car. And at times when you want to leave the keys so you dont lose them when swimming, jet skiing, getting shitfaced at the camp site etc etc....

    According to my dealer, the Touch Keypad Entry System is only compatible with 2019 and later 4Runners (mine is 2018). As a DIY’er, I accept that ‘fact’ with a little skepticism - as in there might be a way to make it work. Does anyone out there have experience with installing a capacitive touch entry system to their pre-2019 4Runner? I’d love to hear any suggestions or words of warning.

    They should have done it the Ford way and mounted it on the door or the B pillar. With it on the windshield you'll need to replace it when/if your windshield gets replaced.

    I just don't see the value in it except the situation Toyota Jeff explained. You dont have your keys on you but you need to get in. That is rare in my case. I always have the FOB in my pocket.

    I really think that is kind of odd that if want work on any 5th Gen … Very nice to have!
    Currently have this option on our 2015 Ford Fusion Hybrid and I had it on my old 2008 ED 4WD Explorer … definitely a great and useful feature!

    Anyone have the Toyota Part Number? …
    Need to call and verify local dealership myself because I’m curious now why I can’t install on my 2016 4RTP?

    Guess you would be screwed either way … wait unless you were holding a glass of rum or vodka to pour on the windshield over that area, but I wouldn’t be wasting my drink … lol

    We have this on our 4Runner. It was the ONE port-installed accessory that I wanted.. so I was happy that the vehicle we purchased had it. Seems to work well and definitely comes in handy when participating in water based activities.

    There are about 5 wires coming out of the pad.. I imagine it would be a nightmare to install. Removal of dash most likely necessary.. not sure tho.

    Or pour out the vodka and get you a real drink, like bourbon.

    Sorry to bump an older thread but has anyone with a pre 2021 installed this with success. From what I understand this should work with any vehicle that;

    "uses a negative pulse to lock/unlock (the door lock switch on the driver's door triggers the circuit to ground when you press the lock/unlock switch)"

    (I don't know exactly what that means)

    Based on this post;

    https://www.reddit.com/r/4Runner/comments/pvfr8y/toyota_touch_keypad_installed_on_rear_quarter/

    Just looking for confirmation from someone who has a pre 2021 who has successfully installed.

    Thanks!

    It's a very simple device that needs 12v constant, a ground and then goes connected to the lock and unlock wires to either pulse with 12v or pulse to ground as you've described. This makes it so the keypad works with many vehicles. I have it and love it; go for it!

    Not at all, the connections are done at the driver's side kick panel (near door jamb). It's super easy.

    I have mine installed on the driver's side trunk window (the one that has the radio antenna embeded; I had to extend the wire harness for the keypad and it worked out great)

    I used the instructions included with the touch keypad, very simple to connect the harness to the vehicle's wiring. I used this from Amazon to extend the harness using the same colo wires: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01M0O1NXM?ie=UTF8

    You do NOT need the installation kit from Toyota for the touch keypad; this costs as much or more than the keypad itself and it's not necessary as the keypad includes everything needed to install it. I wrapped my extended harness in Tesa tape https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00XPDVER2?ie=UTF8 and ran it under the trim along the floor all the way to the D pillar. You need to release the panels that surrounds the rear quarter window so you can feed the wires to the touch keypad and then mount the keypad on the glass.

    I prefer it in this location it's still on the driver's side but it's so discreet that no one can tell it's there until you waken it. Also, because my windshiled is tinted from the inside and has ClearPlex film on the outside the keypad would not work. I moved it to the rear side glass out of necessity but it works so much better for me there that it's what I would do if I had to install another one.

    That's great thanks! Where did you purchase from? From a dealer or elsewhere? And since it's one part number, how would you order without the install kit?

    Also, do you think it would be possible to mount to the rear of the side window. I'm thinking so the wires would not be exposed?

    Thanks again!

    A dealer in Florida that sells on eBay. They won't sell outside of the SE region though. I had my sister in FL buy it and mail it to me.

    The keypad is made by a 3rd party and Toyota South East dealers market it for Toyota vehicles as a dealer or port installed accessory. It will work with many vehicles.

    2021 But this will work on all 5th gens and likely others too. Toyota dealers install this on Hihglanders, Camry and others.

    I just ordered this for my 23 TRD ORP that will be arriving in the coming weeks. I live in SoFlo and I want to be able to take my pack for rides and errand runs. This is the perfect option, as I won’t be able to lock it from the outside while it’s running. I also like to paddle board so having the ability to secure my keys inside without risking losing or damaging them is god-sent!! The install looks easy enough. The dealership quoted me almost $500 for parts and 4.5hr labor, so that’s a hard no. TBH, the dealership didn’t really know much about it and I’m in SET territory.
