Has anyone run into any issues when removing the bumper on a 2020? I'm considering the C4 Fab low profile bumper (w/o the bull bar for obvious reasons), but started to wonder if there was a possibility of problems when it came to removing the front impact sensor.

Subscribing because I am thinking of adding the valances from the Pro or TRD off road to my new one, but curious how much bigger a deal it is to remove the bumper with the radar crap in there.

There are already videos on youtube. You just disconnect the wiring harness to remove the bumper.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tapQ1ojIvJ0 He is removing the bumper from a 2020 TRD Pro to install Morimoto XB lights. 1030 mark is where he shows the connector.

Great, that's all I need lol. My luck, I'll unplug the damn thing and something won't work right when I go to re connect it.

Disconnect the negative battery terminal before you unplug it. Probably not needed but when in doubt, play it safe

I too will be going with the C4 lo pro. I would like the full height bull bar if possible. So I ran some tests. Strapped a 3" pool noodle to the front approximately where said bull bar would sit. No issues with the DRCC sensor on all sensitively levels. I'm pretty sure I'll be ok but I'll still wait to hear from C4. I'll try and post pics of my........science.

are you positive that you’ll get the same result with steel instead of foam?

When I sent my findings to C4 they also said it would need some sort of metal. Only thing I could think of was this besides getting way deep in mounting a pipe some how suspended in the front. As I was posting this I received this new information. Crazy, I must have checked C4s website 3 times a week for a few months waiting for this news.

don’t get me wrong I like the bar on the bumper too but I doubt that your test proofed that it will work. But maybe C4 is willing to help you, maybe they agree to send you one with the bar to test it and in case it doesn’t work you can trade it for one without!? Or you order a blank one with and in case it doesn’t work you grind them off and paint then afterwards...
Anyway, for clear results you need a steel bar with the right diameter in exact height and distance - the devil hides in the detail!

C4 recently posted on their instagram testing the 2020 bumper with the bullbar and they stated there were no issues with TSS. They did mention to not drop the sensor as it will damage it and they're expensive!

That’s great, I guess Toyota did a good job on the radar system, I remember the first s-class with radar, even a big bug on the radar screen could cause failure

I dunno about the other Toyota models but the huge sensor on the 4Runner fails in rain and snow. It doesn't have to be raining hard either. It's a big flat area on a big flat grill, water splashes on it and you get the warning the system is offline.

This is true. It turned itself off on a dry day when I was wheeling. Thought maybe it was because I put it in low and unsymmetrical..... disproportionate..... wait.. not level. But it only happened the once though. After a restart it didn't do it again on the same terrain. I don't use it much anyway but you are correct, it is finicky.

I can't speak to other Toyota models but it seems to be a common thing with most radar equipped vehicles. My other half drives a 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan and it often goes offline in rain and snow or if it gets too dirty. It's really obnoxious as you can't use the cruise control at all, unlike my 4runner where you can disable it and use normal cruise.

yep, TSS is integrated with cruise control.....disable the TSS and no cruise control....there might be a work around, but beyond my skill level.

With the cruise control off, hold the button down for about second and a half and it will go to regular cruise.

You unplug the sensor under the hood release and two clips that the wire harness is attached to the hood release assembly.
Then there are two 10mm bolts holding the sensor to the body below that.

So I'm wanting to take this one step further -- can I just do away with the TSS on the bumper altogether, leave it permanently disabled, and do a full-on front bumper replacement with a steel aftermarket bumper?

Not sure but I read someone said had error codes and turned around and said dealer cleared them. My gut tells me it's s fib because no dealer will accept liability for shutting off a safety feature.

I wouldn't see why not since the sensor is part of the bumper grill.
However, like ForRun mentioned, this causes errors on the dash.
If you don't mind your dash lighting up like a christmas tree, I don't think it'll hurt the drivability.

I have the 2021 mode with the TSS too. I’m thinking about putting on a shrockworks full front bumper. Planning to just move the radar sensor a few inches forward and mount it on the steel bumper (I have tools to make a small bracket for it) I’m not sure if the ‘radar’ is a sonar Doppler sensor or an actual Radar but in any case I don’t see why it wouldn’t work if I moved it a bit forward (assuming there is enough slack in the cable). Has anyone taken some good pictures with the bumper off? I’m planning to do an inspection soon but was hoping to get some kickstart here. I watched a video with someone taking the sensor out and it seemed like a fully insulated part with what looked like a cast aluminum housing (at least the back). So I don’t see why a metal piece in the back (the steel bumper) could affect it. Any thoughts or opinions will be helpful!
