    Hi guys,
i scoured the interwebs and can't find anything on this....I just installed the G2 headlights from Morimoto....they work perfectly, BUT since the fuse box in my 2020 seems to be different from the install videos I found of other 5th gens, the damned box won't close up now....the fuse tap sticks up too much....

anyone have this issue and what did you do to fix it? keep in mind i'm mechanically declined and this headlight install took longer than it should have with lots of cussing....

i'd rather not cut a hole into the fuse box and try to tape up the hole as a friend suggested....

any help would be greatly appreciated :)

    Hey,

Ughh sorry that your fuse box lid won’t shut. I read some reviews about other people having the same problem as you. The only other recommendation I was reading was to put a hole in your fuse box lid so the fuse tap can fit. But like you stated “Why in the hell would you want to do that?”

This is one of the reasons why I decided to go with the AlphaRex Nova Headlights.

Hopefully someone knows a solution to your problem. Sorry!!

NOOOOOO! Use a heat gun! Gently heat about where the fuse will touch then press the top on

Well, I can tell you what not to do! Only because I did and cost me time, money and a rig with no ignition for two days.
1st I bought these mini fuse taps and they work fine... except when you remove them! It tore out my fuse block.
Replaced that and found these low profile fuses with a wire built in! Lucky me I tried it in the old fuse block 1st and damn thing didn't fit.
I ended up with a manual switch in the cab but you can also tap the ignition fuse in the driver's footwell

That's for the fuse block by the steering column in the cab. If you tap the inside ignition fuse you should use that cover. On the other forum someone posted a file or link so you could 3D print your own.

I don't own a 5th gen, just thought it might help him out. Sounds the like meso might be able to make custom ones. Wonder if they could make an under the hood one?

That would be awesome! I just found the whole thing odd that Toyota puts the one fuse most everyone needs to tap in a place that you can't

Okay, don't cut a hole in your cover! I had same issue. #1, make sure you swap out the 3amp fuse with a 10amp. The 3 amp will just keep blowing. #2 just plug it into the heated mirror fuse like on previous model. Everything will work fine and you won't have to alter your cover. The only reason they put it into ignition fuse is because with version 2, that was the only place they could get the Bugatti style start up to work when ignition starts. To me, that didn't matter since I can't see it anyway from driver seat.

so you haven't had any issues since using the mirror heater spot then?

Also, careful which direction you plug the the fuse tap in. The fuse puller on bottom of cover will hit the tap and not close properly. You'll see when doing it. Simple.

Alpharex ships those with the lights and they do not fit under the cover. For whatever reason they redesigned the 2020 fuse box

They ship the one OP is using or the shorter one I linked? At any rate, I think what you're saying is that the fuse box cover on the 2020's doesn't have room for an add-a-fuse at all?

i believe the one Morimoto ships is the larger one.... and what you ask is partially correct....the fuse tap fits if it's moved to another section of the fuse box.....if you look at my pic where it's plugged in, the section is raised higher than the rest of the fuse box and that's the issue....

but after plugging it into the mirror heater plug in the lower section as mtnbiker67 suggested, everything is working just fine (minus the fancy startup light show that neither of us care about since we can't see the lights from the driver's seat)

There are two types of fuse tsps people are using. One is a mini-tap, the other is a low profile mini-tap (LP-mini). It looks like you used the mini, which sits a little higher than the low profile version. The LP-mini would work better.

I found this thread after googling around with the same issue after installing raptor lights and using the engine compartment ENG fuse location (unable to fully close the lid) - what was your solution? Did you use the heat gun to re-shape the lid? Curious - I can sort of close the lid but it's not fully secure. I have the 2021 TRD Pro Lunar Rock 4Runner.

Hi all. I have the same fuse cover issue. Alpharex recommends using the INJ fuse to tap into. I would rather not modify that fuse box. I will run a 16AWG wire into the inside fuse box and tap into the IGN No.3 fuse. It's switched. I'll test which side of the fuse power comes from and orient my tap in the correct direction. The Alpharex Nova series DRL power comes with a low profile fuse tap and a 5A fuse. If you see anything wrong with this solution please let me know. If you know what the IGN No. 3 fuse is used for specifically, please let me know or send a link. I can't find any information on it. I'll update with results or issues. Thanks for this thread and all the input.

With a multimeter you can map out the fuse functions of the engine fuse box and cabin fuse box. But to be confident you need some reliable documentation. Maybe someone here can provide it, but you can also get it yourself.

If you’re doing any electrical additions or modifications to your 4Runner you really need to be sure of what you’re tapping into.
I’d suggest you get a 2-day subscription to the Toyota Technical Information System (TIS) for $20. You can browse around and you can download the pertinent wiring diagrams, repair info, and other tech info for your model year so you have a reference library for this and any other electrical mods you may do in the future. It can take a while to do all the downloads manually.
