I just bought a 2021 4Runner TRD off-road and I am totally disappointed with the engines lack of power and performance . I installed a Thornton performance chip (odb2) which is supposed to add 60hp but not much difference . Still feels weak and ridiculously under powered . Years ago I had a Toyota Supra with a 6cyl 4.0L motor and that thing was screaming fast ! I assumed it was the same motor . How do I get this dog to preform like a hipo race motor ?

Did you not...test drive before purchasing the vehicle? Also, a chip claiming to add 60hp is just hilarious. If that was the case they’d be selling like hot cakes. The 4runner is a tank, slow but bulletproof. Also, supra has never had a 4.0l engine. You’re comparing apples to oranges here.
Drop $7k-8k and add a supercharger if you want to see a real 60hp gain.

    Welcome to the forum.

If your post is serious, it seems you made two bad purchases. First was buying a 4Runner (4000+ lb. truck) expecting it to perform like a Supra, second was a 'performance' chip, which do absolutely nothing on these trucks. Did you test drive the truck prior to purchase?

Superchargers are not available on MY 2020 and up yet due to computer changes for TSS. I've spoken directly to Magnusen about this so yes, it's credible information. They are working on it.

That said, there's really nothing worth doing until they crack that ECU code except regear it. If you don't like your MPG now, I'd recommend you not look when you regear, but it will help.

Me personally, I've owned a few of these, so I knew what I was buying when I bought it. The 4.0L is torquey down low, no upper HP. It's incredibly reliable and perfectly suited for the 4Runner in offroad situations and light towing. It's a truck, and even in truck standards, it's not a fast one. But it will outlive you. In this case, it will outlive your ownership of this truck :)

Life is short, so mod it if you like, but to be very upfront, you will not make that vehicle faster like you want if you're expecting Supra, or EcoBoost levels of go. You will be pleased to know, however, that the 4runner has a stupid high resale value because it's so reliable and good offroad, so you'll likely be able to swap it out and lose very little if you're wanting more power. If you stick with it, and use it for it's intended purposes, you might find you love it anyways, despite it's terrible performance.

Pull the chip and get a Sprint booster for throttle response. Zero hp gain but feels like it.

LMFAO my wife drove my 4 runner for the 1 st time and complained that it "rides like a truck".
I said thank you, cuz thats what I bought it for, to tow, and carry stuff.
    It is a truck!
If I wanted a smooth ride, I'd buy a cadillac

I agree that a Magnuson Supercharger is the only thing that will get you closer to the performance you are looking for when they become available for the 2020 and up 4Runner. There are a few reviews by owners that speak favorably about them that you might want to checkout.

The supra was never offered with a 4.0. It has always been powered by an inline 6, ranging from 2.0L to 3.0L.

You want this pig to move? Supercharge it.
