    Hello,

New here and bought my first 4runner (first time I ever bought a new car). 2021 sr5. Within 3 days of owning, my second key is missing. I have no recollection of ever seeing the second key but the salesman said he gave me two. Assuming he did, then I lost one. Ive torn the house apart and called the couple of places Ive been to. The dealer gave me a cost of 350 plus tax for a new key fob. Ive seen some websites where you can get an oem fob from toyota factory for 150 (not programmed or cut). Anyone ever try one of these sites? Ever program a 5th generation fob? Thanks in advance.

Welcome. That sucks that you spent that much for a new vehicle and the salesman won't give you a break on a second key/fob. What proof do they have that you got two keys? Maybe talk to the dealership manager?

Did you get the gray head valet key? There actually should be three keys delivered; two keys with attached fobs and one chipped key with no fob

Thanks all. I looked through the sign off papers and nothing about keys. Im not saying I didnt lose it, but Ive never lost a key before and seems odd it would be gone in 3 days and no one ever saw it. They never mentioned anything about a gray head valet key. I can ask him about it.

If you didn't get the valet key it seems reasonable that you didn't get the fob key, either. I guess it depends how much you care... but if you want that stuff you need to get up in the dealer's business...

Edit, you looked in the pouch that the owners manual comes in, yes?

Oh yes, I have looked many a times. I will definitely ask him. I am bringing in next week for the undercarriage coating (that was an entirely different internal debate). For all the money Im throwing at him, Im hoping he can help me out a little bit.

Yeah, don't let him drop you, just because the sale's already closed.

FYI...new ‘21s don’t come with a valet key anymore. There is a setting in the head unit that you can switch to valet.

Our 2020 ORP didn't come with a valet key either, but I did see on the head unit a place to set the vehicle to "valet mode". The dealer should "work" with you a little after a new purchase.

Lesson to be learned for new vehicle buyers. Don't sign the purchase contract until you have spare keys in hand. No keys, no sale. Dealer will suddenly be all over finding you a spare set.

More dealer BS, I see. Why will they not help you? You just spent many thousands of dollars with them. And, now, you are falling for the old "undercoat" scam. I would:

    1) Contact Toyota directly. Tell them you want to return the car. You want one with two keys, or, as many as it SHOULD HAVE!

    2) Threaten Small Claims Court.

    3) A good offense is the best defense.

    4) Cancel the under coating.

Just my opinion. I hate dealers (as you can tell) but I have ALWAYS had to make them provide proper customer service.

The problem arises from the fact that the dealers actual business model is to screw you. You would think it was to sell cars. No, that's just "the bait". Once you are hooked they know they have a live-one. The under coating is a perfect example. I bet any body shop in town would advise you to NOT do it at all. The others would do it for about 1/2 of what the dealer wants.

    Run, Run fast.

My 2013 had only one key. I bought a Factory blank on eBay about $30 then had my local locksmith cut and program for another $60. Works great!

Thanks for all the replies. I got them to come down 100$. Im a little surprised they wouldnt meet in the middle. But at least saving some. The cheapest I found online was 150, plus whatever it costs to cut/program which looks to be about 60-70. At this point, I just want the key so I can move on (this process has been very slow). I have to bug him every couPle days.

I did get some good luck however. As they were doing the undercoating last week, they accidentally put on the interior and exterior paint protection that I didnt request/pay for. Im chalking that up to karma

I would not go back to this dealer again, like I'm looking for a different dealer for the future. When you purchase a vehicle from a dealer and drive out of the place, you should not feel in any way you've been screwed, if there is ANY doubt in your mind it's like Fishguy said; "run, run fast!" Too many dealers to pick from, that's sometimes what the dealers forget!

"Accidentally" did more than authorized? I am NOT surprised. I bet they asked you to pay for their mistake.

Remember: They do not own the cars they sell. However, once you buy one, they own you. Think about it.

Funny how everyone bashing the dealer but OP said he doesn't know if he lost it or if he didn't get it.

Since when has it become someone elses fault for you own fuck up? If the dealer didn't give him one then its on them. But to say screw them when no one knows if 2 keys were given or not is just plain dumb.

Threaten small claims court LOL. Just LOL.

I wouldn't risk it if I were you and bought a key from some websites. Find a service that deals with duplicate keys and contact them. When I duplicated my keys, I tried for a very long time to find a locksmith who would make a new key inexpensively and efficiently. And I was lucky that I found one, and he even told me and showed me how he programmed this key. Conclusion: there is a very long procedure that requires a huge skill, so never take risks and do not save on it. Find an experienced locksmith and arrange with him to create new keys. Just don't lose your primary keys, haha.
