Many of the how to videos on installing LED bars, raptor lights, ditch lights etc.. do not include installing a relay, additionally I've seen none install a 1amp diode between the switch and relay.

The diode will only allow electricity flow one direction. When the switch turns off the device, the relay closes and and due to the magnetic field collapsing, this creates reverse voltage that back feeds into the switch and could cause it to burn up, melt, etc..

This makes sense now as I see a lot of reviews on the custom 4 Runner/Tacoma switches were people are reporting them burning out, melting, or not lasting very log.

The instructions for the AirOnBoard switches, indicate a 1a diode needs to be installed. As well as emphasizing the switch must use a relay as well.

Who has installed a diode, and/or relay, or NOT install them. I know there are several harnesses you can buy pre-made. I made one up tonight and installed a switch for my Raptor lights as I didn't want them running all the time the vehicle was running.

Very interesting. I have never thought of that. Where would the diode be wired, on the relay itself? I see 5 blade relays are available with a diode wired, wonder if 4 bladed Bosch type are as well?

I don’t see any 4 prong with built in diodes. And very few relays 4’or 5 prong even have them. Reading reviews on Amazon for various ones , a few people are taking about manually adding them in line between the switch and relay connection.

The diode across the relay coil with cathode towards the A+. We do this a lot in aviation also to prevent relay chatter.
