Hello! I just wanted to get some opinions on an extended care program for my 2019 TRD Pro 4runner that I pick up next week but first let me lay down the reason I am asking. Reluctantly I just sold my 2007 FJ Cruiser TRD 6MT (original owner) with 131K miles and purchased the 4runner at Mountain States Toyota in Denver. I buy and sell a lot of cars and have always known that extended warranties are a waste of money but things have changed in the past 10 years in regards to vehicles relying more heavily on computers. In 2017 my wife purchased a brand new Honda CR-V Touring edition with all the bells and whistles and in the first 6 months we had multiple issues with the computer system. One issue in particular caused it to be in the shop for two weeks so that they could figure out what was wrong with it. As much as I trust a Toyota engine and transmission I don't know how much I trust the computerized technology. So on that note I have considered purchasing the Toyota Platinum Care package because it would supposedly cover those issues if they happen. Your thoughts and opinions would be greatly appreciated!

I generally would agree that the warranties are generally a waste of money but if you got a decent price and don't mind paying for the peace of mind, then nothing is wrong with buying it.

I bought an extended warranty exactly one time from Toyota. A few years in the head unit (radio) stopped working. It was gonna be a lot of money to get an OEM replacement, but I had the warranty. After requesting warranty work, I was informed that the head unit specifically was not covered.

After that experience, I won't buy another due to the ridiculous fine print. Read what's covered and whats not. You'll see that the extended warranties are after sale money makers.

I’ve had the platinum extended warrantee on 5 Yotas, 3 of which are still in force. I am glad that they now can run 10 years, cause these stay in the family or in the farm.
Though problems have been few and far between, the paper has saved me major dinero and worry, snd is well worth it to me.
In Hawaii, the one dealer/distributor does not sell Toyota branded warrantees (or honor entune and some other stuff) but issues equivalent major party equivalent. Everything pretty much except batteries and other consumables covered. Since I get service all done at the dealer for vehicles ubder 10 years old, this has always been fine and the deductibles are free. My only issues have occurred after they have run out when fixes & parts became expensive.

I have it on my 2019 4 runner and wife has it on her 2018 toyota camry. Her camry rear speaker stopped working last week. We also had front bumper paint flaking off and repainted. Won't have to pay anything per toyota. I agree with all computers great idea to get.

I just bought one, to me it’s worth it. Just a small piece of mind. It was 100k/6yr platinum warranty for $1095. There are exceptions though, but most major stuff is covered. To me what matters the most is anything related to the powertrain. I had it on my previous Tacoma and it had a massive engine leak and it was covered under warranty, with my rental paid for, for the duration of the repair.

I’m not generally big on warrantees but I bought the Toyota ECP for my ORP. I rarely keep vehicles past 4 years, and they’re easier to sell if they have a little warranty on them. At the same time I get a little extra coverage until that day comes.

They are relatively inexpensive insurance, and add to sales value. Any major single component going down after 36 months goes by will cost a lot more.

I just purchased my trd pro this week, I initially declined the maintenance program and platinum coverage program and they came down 1/3 on the price. I declined again and they took 50% off. I was able to get both for around 1000. Like the op said with all the tech in these newer models it’s just peice of mind. I figure these motors are essentially bullet proof by now so I was really only worried about the tech

I think around $250 per year of post-warrantee coverage, in low mileage category, for platinum level is a good deal.

Thanks for the info guys! I ended up paying for an 8 year plan and negotiated down to $1100 with zero dedcutible. I do like the peace of mind and was willing to spend some cash for that. I had a few days before I was to pick up the truck so I used that time to work the finance guy down on price through email. I got him down to $1700 from his original $2600 then I stopped answering his email. The day I showed up to pick up my 4runner he was still at $1700 so I told him I wouldn't pay more than $1100. He wouldn't budge so I drove off in my new vehicle without buying anything from him fairly certain that he would call me the next day and sure enough he did. He was magically able to come down to my price. I was able to negotiate this based on the information you all provided so thank you very much!

I just picked up a 21 today and they hit me with $2,600 for 8yrs/100k policy. I took delivery but walked away from the extended $$$ VSA. I am going to try TXVooDoo's strategy. I'll let you know if I make any progress.

Total waste of money. I think of all the warranties I’ve been presented over the years and tried to add them up. If something goes wrong I’ll just pay for the repair. I’m still ahead of the game by saving money by never buying those warranties.

it's the olde dog and pony show...just another way to generate extra monies for the company...heck, if they built a solid product in the first place ( computer driven vehicle ) then there would really be NO NEED to this..but if you want peace of mind...by all means , and purchase...just make sure you read the ultra fine print...

With more and more electronics, I think it’ll appeal to more people. With mechanical items, like the power train in the 4runner, it’s a proven platform that’ll run if you put gas in it. Electronics can go out at any time, might not be frequent but when it does happen it can be a costly repair.

Update: I tried holding out and using TXVooDoo's strategy for a better deal on the VSA. The stealership came back with $1,775 for 5yr/100k. My wife used to work in the industry and reached out to an F&I person at another dealer. They are friends and he provided at cost numbers of 5/100k = $1,725 and 10/100k = $2,320. I know this can vary by region and you might save more going 3rd party. I am simply following up to provide what the at cost prices are through the dealerships located around eastern PA/NJ. Being this is my 3rd 4Runner and they are one of the most reliable vehicles, I am leaning toward banking that money and use it toward any future repair cost should the need arise.
