    Hi all,

    I'm currently in the process of buying a 2021 4Runner TRD Pro – will sign the papers tomorrow and probably pick it up next week. I'm joining here to participate in the discussions and for the time being maybe ask some questions.

    So far I've never owned a SUV style vehicle, my cars were (nearly) always compact and/or sporty. Wife and I decided we needed something that is significantly different to our current stable that lets us go down gravel roads, forest roads and the occasional easy jeep trail.

    Since we REALLY wanted full LED lights, dual zone climate controls and were hoping for good off road features like MTS and Crawl Control we're now getting this TRD Pro. We were debating between this and the 2021 Land Rover Defender 110, but in the end, that one is too much an unknown quantity and with Land Rover's questionable record we decided to go with the 4Runner even though we really have to get used to how incredibly slooooooow it is. ;-)

    So far so good, we'll hopefully take possession next week and will start exploring by the end of the month when we have a four day road trip planned. I plan to keep the car mostly stock until we run into any issues when taking it out. Learn first, change when needed ... only things we are going to add (portable items) are recovery gear like shovel, Maxtrax, air compressor, recovery strap and a recovery attachment for the hitch. Over the winter I plan to build a simple sleeping platform inside and if we like exploring with the 4Runner, we'll probably add a roof tent. But for now, we'll keep it simple.

    See you all around here ... have a great day!

    @Antman – Thanks, going through Toyota 101.

    @flyinhoot – Thanks for the pointer, but right now, I think I'm more likely to damage something with momentum than actually help. A simple strap will not let me use momentum and as far as I am concerned, I'd rather leave that to experts for the time being until I learned more about this (not just theory). I also think that it is highly unlikely we'll get into any kind of situation where we'd need a Yankum rope, we'll start slow and explore the capabilities first. Not 20 anymore ... ;-) Plus they pack a lot bigger and that's something I'll try to avoid as well before I know what the final layout of the car will be.

    Welcome from Eureka CA

    Sounds like you got a nice truck coming

    Good call on the LR. Jeesh. What a nightmare that would probably be in about 2 years.

    The thing is: nobody really knows. If it's mostly electronics – okay. But most of the stuff that car does off-road is regulated by the electronics, and that scared me a bit. I don't want the features I might rely on to suddenly stop working in the middle of nowhere because some underpaid contract programmer has cut more than a few corners in the software. The "hardware" of the Land Rover is lightyears ahead the 4Runner in my current opinion, but if the electronics/software sucks, you might still be stuck somewhere. The 4Runner definitely shouldn't have a name with "Runner" in it since it is so darn slow on road ;-) – yeah, I know, perspective, but we traded a Mini Cooper S for it and our other car is rather more sporty. Ah, different tools for different jobs.

    Word... molle panels are great for storing that stuff out of the way regardless of configuration.

    Makes sense. We'll see what we end up with over time and where to store it. I saw the rear window molle panels and that could be a good way to store stuff that stays more or less permanently in the car. My wife has a first responder backpack she carries in "daily drive mode", maybe we just have a few storage items (either Pelican case, backpack, duffel, whatever) for this kind of stuff that is easily moved in and out depending on what we are doing.

    Right now, it's sitting here, bone stock:
