You might need to replace the latching mechanism. If it doesn't open, try pushing/leaning on the liftgate before pulling the handle. Keep leaning on it until it unlatches, then pull.

Mine was like that for a few years until I replaced the latching mechanism.

I tried leaning on it. We watched a you-tube video on how to remove the latch and my husband did that this morning. No sign of any rust and latch will freely move. I'm pretty sure it's the motor that tightens the liftgate after I manually close it. Anyhow, after he took it apart and put it back together, it now works again! Pretty sure it will be happen again. I really don't care if it automatically tightens the gate. I can do it myself. The irritating part was it would not completely close and not open at all.

I'm glad you got it open. So, it wasn't doing anything at all? It could just be dirty electrical connections.

Mine would make the usual noise, but remain latched.

No. It would not do anything. No usual sound of the door tightening. It would not shut tightly or open.

Hopefully it keeps working! I don't think it can latch tightly without the motor. It might be worth trying to find a replacement and keep it handy in case it craps out again.

No. It would not latch tightly or open;) I haven't opened it since then. I do have a family member that's a mechanic can get the part pretty quickly if necessary.

Any chance the battery was replaced or disconnected recently? There is a computer in the hatch that needs to be reset in order to work after power loss, just checking.

Don't think so. I haven't opened the liftgate since the incident;)
