    1988 1st Gen 4Runner, Red, 200k and running strong, pending total restoration

    My son Eric entered the UGA in 1998 at which time I bought him his first 1988 2.4L 22RE DLX 4Runner with 33,000 miles.
    This past summer he returned the 4Runner to me with 197,400 miles and pretty much in the same condition as it was in 1998.
    I’m just staring a long, slow process of restoration starting with getting it up to the level of safe driving. The Toyo needs a new front end, steering gear box, and shocks to start with.
    This adventure is going to be exciting, especially since my background is totally unrelated to auto mechanics (other than a shade-tree mechanic in the 1960s,lol!
    I’m a retired Army Physician Assistant specializing in Emergency Medicine.
