I have 65 miles on a new rebuild. 1995 3.0 SR5. I had the all machine work done. Crank turned, cams checked out, valves set, new valve seals, Hastings rings, new H-type pistons (I cant spell that word), Clevite bearings, ARP head and main studs, Aisin water pump and so on. I tried to use quality parts. With all that said this thing is burning oil, especially when you rev it up (not moving). I used Lucas oil engine assembly lube putting it together. I think I screwed up using a 10w30 full synthetic oil for break in. I have now changed it twice and put in non-synthetic 20w50 with the zinc in it. It appears the rings won't seat.

What oil would be better for the break in? Do I need more miles put in it before the rings will seat?

Not my first engine build, but my first 3.0 build.

Did you check ring end gap? Offset rings? Usually you pack the new oil pump with lithium grease?

Plastic gauge the new bearings? Sounds like a fun build....

I did prime the oil pump. Bearing clearance was good. I will try the 10w30 oil for a while and be patient. I will give it more miles. Thank you.

It has been a fun build. I have been primarily a diesel guy up to this point. Rebuilt two Cummins 12v engines and one Ford 7.3 engine. I did not experience this issue with those. Learning curve I suppose. I really like this 4runner. I have put ALL new front end parts on it, 4" lift kit and a ton of other stuff along the way. It is really clean and straight. It does have the auto trans in it but for my purposes it will work perfect.

Again, thanks to everyone for the information.
