Any 2020 owners had issues with the TSS pre collision warnings?

I also have a couple of experiences with the TSS. Just hit 3,000 miles and as i was changing lanes yesterday to pass a truck that was making a right turn into a strip mall, the system flashed the "BRAKE" one time. Another, i was downtown Houston, and got to have the real effect, when someone decided to pull out in front of me from a turning lane and stop suddenly. The system definitely stopped the vehicle nicely, almost breaking our necks... lol. I agree with Singleminded, that having it on the MAX setting will bring about these behaviours. In addition, it seems as though heavy rain does affect the system too, being that if you're travelling on a road that's under construction, the muddy water being kicked up from the car in front of you is enough to "cloud" the sensors. After a while, it does correct itself, but there's also the manual "get out and clean the sensors."

    Cheers,

    Sean

Collision Avoidance system disabled itself a few times for a few minutes over the weekend. We had off and on heavy rain to light showers. My front grill panel also has some dirt/debris on it from road spray so I'm not terribly surprised it shut itself off. They were only temporary shutdowns though.

Tint, Weather Tech mats, LED headlights, and more coming soon.

Being honest, I do tend to drive a little closer to people as to not get cut off (happens way too often), but the system kicks on when I'm really not that close. The cars are stopping or stopped in front of me by at least 4-6 car lengths and it kicks on while I'm coasting at under 50mph, getting ready to apply the brakes. Most of the time it doesn't kick on when I'm in that same scenario. That's why I'm frustrated. It should be consistently replicable, otherwise, something is off with the programming in my opinion.

I have the system turned all the way down already and wish I could just disable it. I wonder if the sensor is thrown off at all by my 4Runner being lifted 3" on 285s?

I hadn't considered the possibility of a lift. Just thinking out loud, that might explain the inconsistent results? For example, if the vehicle in front of you is tall or short. Your computer might be confused because it expects the sensor to be reading objects from three inches lower?

In any case it certainly sounds like the system isn't working normally (even bad normal) for you. It's a drag this is still happening after you put the sensitivity to its lowest setting. Ugh.

my Runner doesn't have the system (2019)...but my wife just bought a 2020 Honda Pilot (I wanted her to get a Highlander but noooo....) and I hate the collision avoidance crap. It routinely triggers going down a two lane road when the opposing car is a quarter mile a way and well in its own lane. Besides, I'm old....I think all this stuff makes ya lazy.

LOL I hear ya. There's no substitute for good driving skills. One day these systems may produce much better results than any normal human (consider, most automatic transmissions these days shift quicker than even the very best drivers and actually get better MPG instead of worse) but that day certainly ain't now. And even when/if that day comes, and cars are saving lives, energy and time by driving themselves, humans will have lost a beautiful skill. How many people can care for or ride a horse these days? That's sad too.

In anyhoooo, that stinks about your wife's Pilot. Kinda surprisingly, the 4Runner seems to have a lot better system. I've only had the three experiences I described above, and two of them were just what you'd want from such a system. And the third was basically harmless, if a bit perplexing.

This is normal. Both 4runners do this and my F150 did it.

Looks like an argument against front license plates to me. I don't miss them at all here in AZ.

Same, and in snow caked to the front of it it has disabled but no other false warnings otherwise.

So wouldn't a new Highlander have had all the same safety sensors? Unless you were just saying she could have gotten a Toyota instead of a Honda...

Just over 500 miles and mine went off today. Cars merging to the left to turn, and the road swept to the right. As I went through the intersection my display in the dash, and head unit lit up with the stop sign. Scared the poo outta me. Got where I was going and googled it, and it brought me home for all the knowledge. Thanks everyone!

And just imagine some day the Russians or Chinese will hack all these systems in thousands of cars in a major city. They could do it for an oil pipeline so why not give them access to all these cars. Then we can pay them off and kindly request that they don't mess with our cars.

Almost two months and 3,300 miles with my 2021 Pro and the TSS has activated twice unnecessarily. Twice from a stop at a T intersection with me turning right into the faster / busier road. It apparently views the oncoming car in the opposite / far lane as a potential collision as I am turning right. Really freaked me out the first time. I thought my engine or transmission croaked on me. I have been driving without it for 43 years and don't feel that I need it now. However, I did like the blind spot monitoring system on the side mirrors of my previous car that is lacking on the 2021.

Additionally, I think the monitor is too bright at night and causes a reflection on the right side passenger window at night. Can it be dimmed or turned off?

It doesn't dim enough, IMO. But it can be turned completely off, which is great for driving on dark roads.

Thanks! Interestingly, I did not have a problem with the brightness at night on city / suburban streets or interstates. But, on a dark country road I noticed I could not see out of the closed passenger window due to the reflection. Two steps forward and one step back with some of this modern stuff! I don't like having a vehicle smarter than me! I am firm believer in the KISS theory - keep it simple stupid!

We are at 13k mi and BRAKE flashed and beeped for what seems like no reason at all. Truck is clean, we were doing 40mph, no one in front of or beside us either. We were driving into the sun though. It’s an ancient system, and it is what it is. It just startled us for sure! I can vouch for the system deactivating in heavy rain too. I do have the system set to the least sensitivity, and I LOVE that I can do that.

The sun is a pretty immovable object. Id rather the TSS activate, than run into it ;)

That made me laugh, thanks! Yes, I’m sure it was the sun, a reflection that bounced off something and triggered it. No biggie, glad it’s not an anomaly. We love our 4R!

Seriously though, I thought this system relied on cameras and sonar/radar/whatever it is…last time I read the manual I thought i read basically its acting on both of those together before dropping anchors. So it’s kind of a mystery why it would go off. Weird

I’ve only had it go off in my highlander and 4runner in appropriate situations.

Edit: maybe bug guts from a gnat over the camera got lit up by the sun, at the same time a dried leaf blew across the radar?

Almost 29K miles on my 2020 SR5 and nothing like this yet. It works as it should, and I live in Seattle area with lots of rain. Will keep an eye out for this however, thanks!

I could see the sun reflecting off of a a manhole cover or a mailbox or a guardrail , or railroad tracks etc. setting it off.
Since I adjusted the sensitivity ,I have not had any more problems .

On twisty mountain road, I have had many false hits, when you come around a sharp curve and your neighbor parks his car at the end of his driveway, it thinks it's going to hit. A lot of these 'techie' things work fine in the city, but not in the mountains.

Another thing bad about ice and snow is with my AVS bugflector II . Ice gets trapped under the deflector and then slides around and when it breaks up, it can come flying back at your windshield at high speeds. I have to take extra time when clearing snow&ice to clear under the deflector.
