Keep it or sell it?

@Agent_Outside agree. It's frustrating the OR Premium doesn't have auto headlights and dual zone climate. I could live without the rest, but I just don't see why they feel you gotta get an upcharge for that. Those items should be standard features on this vehicle at any trim level. The JBL, remote start (part of JBL so only Limited and Pro), I get that. LED beams = easy fix.

Also, don't forget upgraded Skidplate, Exhaust, and rack.

And finally, and I'll say this again. That Fox suspension is really really good.

 

As you seem to be very capable with a wrench, and have no problem with modifications, if I were in your shoes I would look for a 5th gen. Since a 2021 or 6th gen is not in the cards for you, that might seem to be the best of all worlds for you. Not to detract from your thread, I went through the same thing with Discoveries. I ended up purchasing an '03 due to the cost, and after my warranty was over I added a front diff lock, sliders, full armor etc. cost effective wise, it was the best of both worlds.I did have the added benefit of having a good friend who was a Land Rover mechanic, who was able to assist with the particularly tough parts such as swapping out a new front axle/differential to add a front locker. I myself have no problems with modifications, which is why I snagged an excellent deal on a limited. I like the full time four-wheel drive and everything else can be modified at some point. And as a plus my wife is very pleased with the leather seats, dual climate control, sunroof, etc.You should go with your gut, it would appear to have served you very well with your current vehicle. Good luck in your choice.

 

Historically, the last model year before a redesign is the most sought after. A bunch of factors work into it, the largest of which is exactly why you want it. You like that model and want to make your experience last as long as possible. Plus, bugs and deficiencies have all been worked out by the last year, etc.

Usually it is very hard to make a deal on the last model year cars.

Regardless, new cars sales are heading into the toilet due to COVID. You may find a good deal because of that.

Used car sales are super high now due to COVID. You may find more money in your current ride trading it in or selling it.

I normally would trade a vehicle to buy another vehicle. Didn't do that when I bought my 4Runner last year.
Figured Toyota wasn't going to give me what I had invested into my Nissan Frontier.

If you can afford to do so, I'd keep your current 4Runner and add another one. Figure the current one is paid off and isn't eating much, other than insurance. You can then slowly move over your mods to the new one.

I like my 2019 that doesn't have all those additional things to go wrong with it.


We also have a 2020 Rav4 TRD OR that has all those additional bells and whistles. We rarely use them. I do like the heated / cooled seats + dual climate control though. Now if only Toyota can figure out why my battery keeps dying when the Rav4 isn't driven everyday.

 

Just mod whatever vehicle the wife gives the ok... done! Simple

 

I would keep it while buying a new one until everything was removed and it was put back to stock. I definitely wouldn’t keep both though. There’s still 15k or so of value in it, we don’t need 2 5th gens and a newer Highlander for 2 drivers, one of which doesn’t daily drive.

 

KDSS is a deal breaker for me on an OR that you can’t get on a Pro. It’s what makes it better than a Pro, imho. But Pros are cool. Lots of aesthetics. You have to upgrade the suspension on an OR, which some customers don’t want to mess with but it isn’t really a big deal for a lot of us on here. Good luck!

If you have a 5th gen you're not upgrading getting into a newer 5th gen. Even i thought of waiting for the 2022 redesign but I was crunched for time.

The PROs have insane resale, but if you look online recently the TRD off road is holding value extremely well too... losing about $1000-1500 a year which is BONKERS. With that said some pros, depending on supply and demand actually gain value after sold... nuts!

I think all 5th gens will see a dip when the 6th gen comes out. But I've seen 5th gens with a cheap lift, decent tires and maybe sliders selling for 55-60k.

 

I’m not sure it’s necessary to strip a vehicle of mods that are well executed. I see lots of trucks with good mods priced into the total cost and they sell. There was a Pro on here that was a good example. Personally, I wouldn’t worry about making permanent mods, and selling them with the vehicle. Sure there’s always guys on here buying good used after market parts, but I wouldn’t take anything off once it’s on there, unless it had sentimental value for me.

 

So at this point I’m like 80% sure I’m going to keep the current one. Starting to plan for freshening things up a bit and the next round of mods I’m looking at dumping another 7-8K into this one, from there it should be good to go long term with the exception of gears if we do eventually add an offroad trailer.
