So my 2020 TRD ORP has been making this awful noise coming from the rear end. It has no mods (yet), no off-roading (yet), or anything aftermarket done to it. So I take in today to the dealership, as expected, "We don't hear anything", I simply grab the roof rack start shaking the vehicle and starts making the sound. Tech has puzzled look on his face. I tell the tech, "Take it over a speedbump, off a curb, whatever, it's a 4Runner." Back to the waiting room I go... 20 min later, Service Advisor comes out, tells me they are going to order a left rear control arm. I say, "Why don't you order both? The sounds is coming from both sides." Says he'll talk with the Tech, tells me he's not sure how long it will take to the part in. I tell him. "You DC is in Cinny, if you order by 3 it's next day, being a 4Runner I can guarantee that have tons of them there." He starts to question me and that's when I let him know I used to work in Supply Chain/Warehousing/Logistics for Toyota. Anyway... if they order two arms they should be here tomorrow, I made a little video of the issue, incase they can't "duplicate" the noise. If anyone know the source of the rear end noise, please let me know.

Had my appointment with the dealership today, installed the new control arms, tell me it's all good to go. Walk outside with the Service Advisor, grab the roof rack and rock the 4Runner, same noise still present. I just look at the Service Advisor with a blank look on my face until he became uncomfortable. They they ask me if I can leave it so they can try and figure it out. I tell them I can drop it off tomorrow morning. On my way home I become more and more angry as I think about my experience there. I decide to take it to my parents house, since my apartment doesn't allow vehicle work on the grounds.

I jack up the ass end. Throw jack stand's under the rear axel, yank off the tires. I have my dad listen as I shake the hell out of the 4Runner, low and behold we found the problem in 20 seconds... see the pic below.

Squirted some silicone spray and it's dead silent. I can't believe that rubber hose was rubbing one that bracket when the suspension flexed and making that loud of a noise. I let the dealership know about their incompetency.

Noises almost always have a “feel” to them. If rocking it from the top makes it do it have someone else do that crawl under and but your hands on different connections and bushings. I’ve probably start with looking at the sway bar bushings/links.

I'm so tired of messing with dealerships. The last few times I took a vehicle in and got that kind of treatment I just smiled and said "Fine, I'll call corporate on the way home." It's worked so far.

In process: Slee Rock sliders, dual battery, compressor, hidden wireless winch w/factor 55 hook and fair lead, ceramic tint, clear bra full front end and rocker panels, gobi rack, rock lights, LED head lights & high beams, 2” lift (revtek), Icon rebound rims, 285/70/17 Good year Duratrac tires...to be continued
I had a sound that sounded like nuts were not tight on about a dozen bolts and the washers we bouncing all over. I finally did crawl under and could find nothing loose other than one washer that did not have a bushing on the passenger rear suspension. This was after I had a lift out on (clearly not correctly) but for the sake of experimentation I taped the washer to the bracket to stop it from moving. It actually helped but over time the noise got worse. It was rattling over minor bumps in the road that my sons mustang doesn’t even notice.

I finally went back and the dealer (who I very much like) sent it to 4WP and offer 3 days I got it back with a new bracket and bushing set up that matches what was on the drivers side rear. This is again with the lift. I don’t know exactly what all they changed but it drives better and is silent now and I am very happy.
    Good luck

Wow! Good find and thanks for the update.

Mine makes a similar sound, although it's not nearly as loud as yours.

I'm going to check this out.

Interesting. I have a mystery squeak in the back of mine, but I assumed it was something inside the cargo area. I might have to check this out.

Dealerships can't get good mechanics any more. They pay on book time. If book says job A will take 7 minutes that's all the tech gets paid for. That's why most don't give a hoot, the rest are just dumb

If a dealership can’t get good techs then they aren’t paying enough. Good techs find and stay where the money is leaving only monkeys behind. If this happens long enough you have a dealership with mostly idiots and sometimes an entire brand with chimpanzees working on them.
Plenty of techs move brands for better opportunities.

Plenty of techs leave for issues not related to money. There’s lots of things that play in, not just money.

    Absolutely.
But a good steady income also makes a lot of “issues” more palatable
