Hey everyone. Just got our 2015 SR5 back in June and looking to replace the turn signal module with one that blinks 3x when tapping the turn stalk. Seems minor but we've had that option in other vehicles and its nice to have. Anyone out there made this mod or know where I can get a replacement module? Thx

I also have become accustomed to having the 3 blink turn signal with my vehicles and I'm actually bothered by the 4runner not having that feature. Seems so minor but it is handy. I know in my jeep I can turn that feature on and off with my hand held programmer as everything in the Jeep is controlled through the computer. Not sure if toyota is the same.

You can find this over on the FJForums (blue room). It's a standard Toyota relay that someone has modded out that does more then that. Believe it's about $89

Had/have it on my recenty departed 328xi & on my newly aquired Camry XLE.

I'm guessing u can get a gen-u-whine Toyota part for that trick.

Sorry to bump an old thread!

    Just adding to this to see if this is possible on our 4Runners. This mod was done to a GX470 so I think something similar can be done with our 4Runners? I would be willing to try but I am not good at reading wiring diagrams and such so I wouldn't know what pins to modify like what they did in this vid;

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rMi0O-gxhQQ

Do any of you electrical gurus know if the mod in vid would be even possible on our 4Runners?

Just purchased the module from Kahtec after reviewing the install wiring diagram. The install seemed simple enough so I thought I'd give it a try. Will report back after I install it.

I’m curious if it will flash 6 times after you turn off your indicator. And will the flashing be at the same rate as the normal indicator. Looks like unless there is some logic board in there, it may just flash 6 times after no longer sensing power on the turn signal positive

It is a single tap module. So you tap the turn signal stalk momentarily, only half of what you normally would, and it will flash 6 times.

Yes but it is taking the trigger from the turn signal positive, not from the stalk. So it wouldn’t know the difference between a single tap and the turn signal fully on. Either way, the turn signal positive gets power and sends that signal to the module. So without some sort of logic, it could continue to flash after turning off your turn signal. Or it could have some sort of logic board that says “if triggered twice in X time, don’t flash.” If that’s the case, there could be a slight delay between the one flash instigated with the stalk and the six coming from the module

To me I think this mod has some safety concerns. Mainly, what does 3 flashes indicate to the drivers behind you?
If you're on a multi lane highway and you want to change lanes, do you tap the t/s stalk while you're in your current lane but it cancels
itself before you complete your lane change.
If I'm following a driver that does that, I would think that they are just being lazy.

Case in point. I was a passenger in crew cab F-350 work truck, and we got pulled over by CHP (SoCal), she said that the driver failed to properly signal the lane change. He (our driver and co-worker) said that all the new fleet trucks do that. She ( the CHP officer) said from her perspective it looked like a very quick glance and an abrupt lane change.

After a few minutes of back and forth talking, it ended up with us passengers trying to convince her to do a strip search on him on the side of the freeway.

Funny! But I loved the feature on my F150 and really miss it on the 4R. 6 seems to many, our Fords all have 3 flash and work great. Looking forward to hearing results.

Im extremely interested on this mod as well, whether is for a 3x or 6x flash. I truly miss the feature from my Tacoma and not having it on the 4Runner was a bit disappointing. I wonder if the Tacoma has a module that can be integrated into the 4Runner(?):notsure:

Thought I'd add the wiring diagram directly from the site. Seems simple enough. Though I was reading an install for this on the Tundra forum and he added diodes and relays to the circuit. The diagram from the manufacturer does not show this at all. Anyone know why diodes and relays would be needed? Would it be for LED bulbs?!?! I am using factory bulbs if that makes any difference.

    I plan to tap the wires directly from under the turn signal stalk. from this connector here;

Pink is right, green in middle is left.

Haven’t looked into the wiring of the 4R too much but in the post you linked, OP said it was to invert the signal. Diodes prevent back feeding from the module to the stalk. Looks like OP wired it in to steal turn signal stalk positive signal to trigger Kahtec module which then uses the relays to invert the positive signal to a ground signal and pass that to the BCM flasher module. This suggests the flasher is ground triggered. Having a wiring diagram of the 4R flasher module would help figure out how you could trick it with this module. If you figure out how to do it so it triggers the dash light as well, I’d be interested

I just saw this video and did some research and the mod has been done on Toyota FJ's and they carry 90% of the same harness/warring over to the 5th gen 4runners till 2019. Im pretty sure this can be done on the 4Runners!

There was some progress on this at the other forum but died abruptly for whatever reason; Here is the link to the wiring diagram posted in that thread. Can it be deciphered? I am not an expert at reading wiring diagrams...

I actually bought this module from this exact supplier. I am currently going back and forth with him in regards to wiring and installing. The instructions he gave were not the same as what I see under the dash. Install still requires to tap into a few factory wires and it is not plug and play like what I originally thought when I first messaged this supplier. Since then I found the one from Kahtec and looking to install it as it seems a lot simpler than the Pekatronic option. Will try both out and report back. Just waiting on the Kahtec module to arrive.

Wondering if you would know which Toyota harness to use for our 4Runners and what pins to modify if possible. I am open to trying different options just don't know how to figure out what to do. Hopefully someone smarter can chime in.

The harness from the GX video should match our 4R. So looking at the harness around the same area on the 4R would give you a good idea identifying which one it is.
Also, if you get the Toyota harness (wire relay) it would be a lot easier to compare it with the OEM harness. The thicker pins inside the harness is unique so you won’t be able to mess them up with a different harness anyways.

The part# for the Wire Relay is 82241-35010.

The Diode Dynamics SmartTap CF18 that goes with the Toyota Wire Relay can be purchased from Amazon here https://a.co/d/eXIyyXb

Spent quite a bit of time pouring over diagrams. Forgot I had them all saved on my computer. Looks like the flasher relay is tied to connector F11. From what I can tell, F11 serves the vehicle flashers (front, rear, and mirror) and the trailer flashers. I do not see any other circuits going through it. I am not sure why the note is there about DRL equipped Toyota trucks not being able to use the SmartTap unless they mean the actual trucks with beds. I went out to my wife’s 2017 and unplugged what I thought was F11 to make sure I was looking at the right plug. Unplugging stopped the flashers from working. Counted 12 wires on the plug and 12 on the two wiring diagrams. No other circuits go through it. I would order that pigtail and the SmartTap. I think you will lose trailer turn signal functionality but that could probably be added back easily. Worth a shot and then see what happens?

I run a smart tap in my '05 Tacoma and also in my '02 Tundra. I like the option to signal long (pull till it clicks) or short (push and go, nice for situations where there's very light traffic or you're approaching an intersection at slow speed and you want to give the other driver an indication of your plans. Though the latter use case can just keep the signal on to properly convey intent.

The reason they aren't good to go with DRL is that Toyota likes to combine DRL and turn onto a single wire feeding the amber bulb on older trucks and even current SR Tacoma. I am not sure how the 4Runners work at all though, I defer to @STrooper on that. I believe that if it's possible to disable the drl via the head unit then the smart tap would work properly even on a drl equipped vehicle, you'd just have to figure out some alternate means of sending DRL from stalk to bulbs or do an add-a-fuse for ignition on DRL.

If someone can spell out where/how the smart tap isn't working I might be able to think about options. Kinda worth noting that I have no DRL on either my '05 or '02 at the moment and not yet sure how I'll solve for them. But a TW friend (puppypunter) has solved for DRL off stalk and even honoring parking brake using T harnesses, it's just a bit of a burdensome install.

I think between my Tundra and Tacoma stalk collection I'm close to double digits. Someday I hope to get cracking on that effort.

The DRL and turn signal are not related on the 4R. DRL is high beam on 2014-2020 (although, as noted, the 2020 is wired different) and some 2021 trims. On some 2021s and all 2022+, the DRL is a separate bulb completely from any other light. I’ve got the harness on order and will order the SmartTap. If my suspicions are correct, it’ll take 2x 4 pin relays to get the trailer wiring working in a safe manner

Yeah, I know about the 9005 DRL, making a few harnesses for that side. Interesting how I failed to remember that while writing that earlier post :)

I'm not sure I understand the trailer wiring concerns? In what way does the smart tap cause trouble with the tow connector?
