    Hey y’all, I’m looking for a first gen 4R. I’ve driven nothing but Tacoma’s for years, though I build/abuse other old cars/trucks.

I’m looking at a nice 85 but debating on driveability, vs an IFS truck. Plan is to drive it to work, 50 miles round trip, when it’s not too lousy out (have a beater for crap days). It’ll be cruising at 75 most of the way.

So, any reason to avoid the 85 in favor of 86-89?

Oh yeah, it’ll see some minor abuse, but no major rock crawling, etc. this truck has minor lift and 32’s. Thus, I don’t really care about the solid axles.

The ifs drives a little tighter overall. They both ride like wagons. Weirdly my SAS pickup rides smoother now than it did as an IFS truck.

where is this 85 located so I can buy it when you pass.

Ehh, it’s in Brazil, yeah, Brazil.

just kidding, thanks, good to know you didn’t see a massive difference. I’m pretty familiar driving outdated tech, and don’t expect an 85 to drive like my wife’s fancy GX. Just wanted to ensure it’s not a complete dumpster fire at 70 mph.

Definitely not a dumpster fire. But seems like you get it.

The parts vehicle I bought for my '87 was an '84, but after they started fuel injected engines vs carbureted, and is a manual with solid axle. The guy I bought it from had used it for work when he worked in the patch stop basically drove it over a thousand km every couple weeks for work. He said it was phenomenal, the only reason he parked it was because some teens got on his property one night and smashed out all the windows. But he thought it was great for work
