Greetings. New member, 4Runner owner 4 years. Bought mine to tow my sailboat Chiquita. 4Runner is 3rd generation 2001 SR5, 4WD, automatic, towing capacity 5,000 lb, 220,000 miles, silver. Driven several days a week plus tow several times a year 50-500 miles, boat & trailer 4,000 lb.
Glad to see so many members and subforums. Reminds me of Harley Davidson forum hdforums. Being an intro post I'll say 'other interests' kayaking, sailing, Harley Davidson, grandchildren (retired geezer).
I like my 4Runner except it needs more cupholders!

    Cheers, Budster Kayakeur

D139B022-5305-4E13-A124-0C36FECBFFB2.jpg Welcome. Funny I have a Chiquita too. It’s an older Sears John boat.:)
Fellow Va., been visiting the Shenandoah since the Boy Scouts.
Plenty of time to ride before the rut. I’m relatively new to Harley Davidson but have been riding for 25 years. I know where a 58 sportster is sitting in storage?

Trailering: Thanks for asking. Trailer carries a 23 foot Venture of Newport 23 sailboat, a cutter, mfg 1976, Chiquita yellow, retractable keel, dry 2200 lb. Towing weight and conditions, well, fill it with gear and food and water and outboard engine, guessing 2800 lb, plus trailer about 900 lb = 3700 lb, and on trailer the deck is almost 8 feet high plus 28 feet of mast horizontal perched 9 feet above ground, so side wind exposure is major and center of gravity is high. Trailer single axle, electric brakes, newish tires 45psi, newish bearings and super-long tongue, lots of trailer lights. When travelling I sleep and cook in the boat, which is set up to live on weeks at a time. No covid virus restaurant worries!

I like the 4Runner (except for cupholder deficiency) but I have a Gen 3, 3.4Liter that is under-powered for the trailer and may upgrade to a Gen4 with V8 to pull trailer over the Appalachian Mountains. You're in Virginia? Know of any Gen 4's with V8 and factory tow setup? In either bright fire-engine red or bright yellow?

Your Springer looks like a rocket, daaang, I like the no-fenders look and the forks 'way below the axle. Ever go on hdforums.com? The '58 Sportster, wow, I'm tempted. Had a 2005 Sportster, have a big twin now, Heritage Classic EVO, 830 lbs, looking to downsize to Sportster only 600 lbs.
I'd love thoughts on what 4R, keeping to a tight retired budget. Gen 4, 2003-2009, 4WD, (are there 2 V8's?), does factory tow setup, can I install a weight distribution hitch for low $. Any years have problems? (like first-year gremlins in 2003?)

A sailboat, let’s see? I know a good spot to put in on base I have security clearance and there’s enough draft I saw one there last month? O’ a retractable Keel? Genius!!!

Ya, I checked out the Harley forums. Had a stock 1983 Iron head 1000 like mine. The 58 has been rebuilt it just needs to be finished. 2 frames, Springer, talked him down to 6k.

    Any ideas, folks?
Will Gen 4 work better than Gen 3 towing 4,000 lbs?
Is there a gear between 2 and Drive? (Generation 3 there is a huge ratio difference between 2nd and Drive (overdrive off) )

Welcome from Austin!! Not sure real time numbers but the increased v6 engine size should give more towing I believe rated for 5k? Also, if you go for the 2UZ/V8 then the tow capacity is around 6500 if I’m not mistaken (even higher for 2wd).

    cheers!!
