Gear box/organizer and what do you keep in it?

Just purchased a 2020 TRD Off-Road. I am looking for a box of some type to put in the rear that I can store jumper cables, a tow strap, trench shovel, flares etc... in. I know my 4Runner will never not start, need to be pulled or dug out of a ditch or break down necessitating flare deployment, but just in case others need it!!

Anyone have a solid box recommendation ideally with sections/compartments and a lid so I can stack on top of it?
Separately, what do you keep in your 4Runner?

 

I have a Rubbermaid Action Packer. I have been using one in my trucks for over 20 years and it works great. I just bought a new one for the 4Runner that I am waiting on. REI has the best price, even better than Amazon. I use the 24 gallon box but there are other sizes available.

Thank you guys! I’ve used an Action Packer for years at work and saw the Plano options at Cabelas this weekend. Was thinking one of the two would work great but also wondering it there was something out there with compartments/sections to keep it kind of organized. If not either of those suggested will fit the bill! Thanks

 

8 gallon Action Packer... not stackable but otherwise a good contender. Shown strapped down with D rings and a purpose- sized ratchet strap. Contains shovel, water, blanket, TP, tools, D rings, jumper cables, zip ties, paracord, duct tape, elevated jack base... probably some other stuff I'm forgetting. Tow strap is stuffed next to it and held in by the pressure of the ratchet strap.

 

That looks about perfect size. My work action packer is one size up and bigger than I need. I didn’t know it came in a smaller version!

 

I go with the Action Packers (8 gal) as well. I have two in the back of my T4R. One has oil, ATF, sealants, misc. lubricants, radiator fix, cargo ties, and jumper cables. The other has electrical spares, towels, geology tools, rain gear, radio spares and extra gloves. Not only are they great for storage, but you can stand on them or sit on them.

Downside is the 8 gallon size is sometimes hard to find. I had to order my last ones mail order. Amazon had them, but at a rip off price. Never tried the Plano boxes.

I also use the Harbor Freight "Apache" brand cases for equipment storage.

 

I messed around with a noisy Smittybuilt Vault before dumping it and going with a duffel bag bought from Amazon.



I like this duffel bag better. Takes up less room, prevents smash and grab, and those heavy things (air compressor, shackles, etc) stored in it won't hit me in the head in an accident. I used some pistol cable locks to secure it to the tie downs.

Pelican case for me. Its got my recovery gear, air down/up hoses, 4 way, bad weather gear, flashlights, floodlight, tools, etc.

A little expensive of a case, but it's waterproof, and if I need more room in the back I can always strap it down up top.

I had this in the garage, and it’s worked out pretty well so far. Threw a “hooker” (what my seven year old calls bungee cords) across the front and away we go.

I generally just keep one or two canvas bags right behind the 2nd row seat backs and ratchet strap them to the tie downs.
I also keep a '+' shaped lug wrench and a tarp under a net back there as you can see in a pic below.

I hate how jumper cables always get entangled with other items and how the clamps always catch on other crap when I try to pull them out, so I bag them to keep them organized and to take up as little space as possible. I've been using that bag for quite a few years now - the zipper no longer works, but the cables stay in there just fine.

Find a suitable cloth or burlap bag that some food items come in - I found this bag at Sam's. These cloth bags also work great for ratchet straps and bungee cords - shop with a creative view of reusing the packaging.



I also keep a roll of TP here as it also keeps the tools from rattling

 

I prefer a lower height storage box that spreads out the tool items for finding them easier. Plus they fit under my sleeping platform out of the way. I probably carry way too much all the time, but I can handle just about any roadside emergency, bicycle repair, or camping need.

I use a Rubbermaid and a Sterilite box.
