Picked up my 2020 4Runner TRD Offroad early last week. On the weekend as I was driving, I noticed the display screen of the multi-media system (radio-gps-etc) went black and then gave a one word message "Starting ...", which has been displayed for 2 days now. There was 467km on the odometer at that time. I have tried resetting the system but that has no effect. There is no radio, gps, or phone services, just that black screen with the one word message "Starting ..." I have an appointment at the dealership for tomorrow to have it looked at. It is hard not to be frustrated as this really puts a damper on that enjoyment you get in those first few day/weeks with a new car. If it goes on too long, I think that I will be "Starting..." to get pissed-off.

"Toyota's don't break" lol. Maybe try disconnecting the battery for a few minutes?

Toyota has had entune problems for years, no don’t try to disconnect the battery, don’t try to do anything, wait for your appointment and let them fix it.

Things like this are literally the reason for a warranty, to cover a manufacturer defects. Get it fixed and move on, a radio is not a big deal.

Went in for service this morning. Service guys concluded that radio head unit needs to be replaced (on my new 4runner with 500kms on it). I says ok, how long before it is done? They say 1-2 months to get a new one in and then they will call me to come in to have it replaced! To say the least this is pretty disappointing to have a brand new vehicle that is not going to work properly for the next 2 months! Any suggestions as to anything that can be done, other than to suck it up and put up with the wait?

Call Toyota customer care, tell them if it’ll take them 2 months to fix your brand new vehicle you’d like 2 months of your payments covered. You’d be surprised how willing manufacturers are to cover a month or two of your payments in situations like that.

Lol! If you're going to try to rip on Toyota reliability, maybe save it for a thread about an actual drivetrain issue.

If you've only had it for a week, maybe they'll buy it back and get you into another one. Or, see if they'll take a unit out of another 4runner on the lot. You shouldn't have to drive a brand new truck with no radio.

    ^^^^Or do this!

I guess I should have financed it instead of paying cash for it. Not a lot of leverage left.

Financing, cash, shouldn't make a difference. A non-working head unit shouldn't be acceptable on a week old $40k vehicle.

Hoping this is finally resolved. Here are my visits to the dealership:

    1) Pickup new 2020 4Runner TRD OR (Visit #1)
    2) 467 km, Multimedia system freezes and will not restart. Visit #2 to Dealer who evaluates and says need new head unit (estimated 1-2 months to get one in).
    3) Week later dealer calls and says that a new head unit came in (I was much happier about 1 week wait rather than 2 months). During visit #3 to Dealer, they replace the head unit. On the drive home from the dealer, I notice that the GPS does not track location properly. I manually re-calibrated the GPS location several times but the GPS still would lose position and not track location.
    4) Come into dealership for visit #4. Service tech manually re-calibrates GPS. I told them that I had already done that many times but they thought they may be able to do a better job of it than me. On drive home one block from the dealer, the GPS lost position again. I drove back in and made another appointment for a week later to have them look at it. In the meantime, I read the head unit manual and found out that the GPS symbol with the diagonal line (/) through it that is continuously showing in the bottom left hand corner of the head unit displays indicates that the GPS unit was not receiving a signal. Based on this new knowledge, I concluded that either the GPS antenna was bad, there was no connection between the head unit and the antenna, or the head unit was faulty.
    5) I went in today to the dealer to have it looked at again (visit #5 at about 4000km). I told the service attendant that I thought the problem was one of the above 3 things and made sure that they told the tech to check out the GPS connection and antenna. Turns out that when the technician checked, the connector between the antenna and the head unit was incorrectly attached during the head unit replacement (Visit #3). When the technician made the proper connection, the GPS received a signal. Aha!

On the drive home today the GPS worked fine. I am hoping this is all a bad dream and that things will function as they should from now on.
