A young guy that I knew. I was doubtful for him at the beginning because of the cost of the car at auction. Even a wrecked Shelby Mustang commands a high price.

Yes, even a wrecked one will fetch $$$. I was bitten by the Shelby bug when my Dad and I walked into Raytown Ford back in 1968. Dad was looking for a Fairlane station wagon. Sitting on the showroom floor was a new '68 Shelby GT500 convertible, red. The look in Dad's eyes, and my own... well, let me just say that itch was never satisfied until a year ago. Thanks to my wife, I have one now. Not a 1968 model, but super special all the same. At least to me. Most folks don't know the difference between a regular Mustang and a Shelby, nor do most even care. The history, Carroll Shelby, the racing... is all so fascinating to me. When Ford vs. Ferrari came out, I got many more looks and inquiries about the car. I see a few around my area from time to time, but not very often. Love the song! One last snippet from way back in '68 at the Ford dealership... I told my Dad (as an 8-year old) that I would one day, own a Shelby Mustang. I wish he had lived long enough to see it actually happen.

They need to figure out a better power supply before we can say there's an environmental advantage.

Otherwise, I agree. Aside from having to stop and charge every few hundred miles, it sounds pretty appealing.

Of course, to understand the actual environmental impacts of electric vehicles one has to look at not only how the electricity itself was produced (coal? natural gas? wind/solar/hydro?) but the entire lifecycle of the vehicle. For example, there's the energy and pollution involved in mining the needed materials and then manufacturing the batteries, and there's the resources and pollution involved in recycling or disposing of the car at the end of its life. etc. etc. etc. It's silly to think only about the amount of gasoline that's being saved.

But this has in fact been studied and the results are BEVs being better overall for the environment than internal combustion vehicles. It's not just tailpipe emissions, it's the whole lifecycle. And that advantage continues to increase as we continue to transition away from coal and gas and toward greener sources of energy (we've already gone farther there than a lot of skeptics thought possible). Some of the car mags have covered this. There's been good reporting in arstechnica.com too. Here is a source study from the EU. https://www.eea.europa.eu/publications/electric-vehicles-from-life-cycle

    Cheers

Thanks for the information. It's good to see that people are actually thinking about it. In the past, it seemed like some people believed that electricity and batteries came from magic.

I am curious if this is an apples to apples comparison, though. I would also be curious to see how a hybrid compares.

It's good to see that the technology is advancing.

Now the biggest challenge seems to be the range. It's gotten better, but the issue for me would be long distance travel. If they can figure out how to get 350 miles of range out of a 10 minute charge, I would be sold. Until then, I'll stick with gas.

Totally agree. We're going to get there, it's a question of when. My hunch is I'll be ready to buy electric within 5 years, but it would be a second or third car -- not the one you'd use to, say, evacuate in an emergency. My guess is that's 10-15 years away. Hopefully my 4R will be an excellent companion until that time comes.

It seems unless they find a viable (sustainable) source for, or an alternative to, lithium for batteries, that will be the limiting factor on EVs going forward.

The big benefit of owning electric vehicles is the smug you emit. Its amazing.

I’m done, this is my last vehicle. Going to do a few more mods, keep it up as it’s in pretty good shape already then pass it on to our first Grandson. I get 11 more years with it.

Never getting rid of the 4Runner. But hope to compliment it with a 2018 GTR for days I'm feeling frisky!!!

For me, something practical. A family vehicle like the 206.

Id love a 206 but some of the places I wanna go would require modifications. Also, the price tag on 206 is higher.

Well I'm not thinking realistically about this, although I do like the 182 as a platform.

I JUST purchased our 4Runner, so I don't foresee it cycling out. My wife drives a X1 M Sport, but she's already trying to take over the Pro. She does want to add a Porsche (her dream car) to the stable within the next 5-10 years, and I would like a classic of the sorts (Impala, Nova, something of the like). That timeline of course include a house change w/ two additional stalls and one more kiddo.
