Looking for some advice - my wife's eyesight is not the best, getting a bit harder for her every year, and she has a hard time reading street signs at night. I want to get her a portable GPS unit for her 2018 Kia Soul. I know nothing about those type of GPS units, but would think as long as it gave clear spoken directions and was easy to use, that would work for her. Anyone have any recommendations for a portable vehicle GPS that isn't too pricey (though that's not too much of an issue)?

    Also, one that's good for a not-too-tech savvy person...

Thanks in advance for any input or unit suggestions!

    Gary

The other option might be to look at an aftermarket head unit that includes GPS - she's really bugged that her stereo didn't come with a cd player...

Eyesight... good grief the first thing that goes... I haven't had a dedicated GPS for years. Waze has been my go to for quite a while now. Though, now that they removed Cookie Monster as the voice I used, I find myself not using it much... Cookie Monster was awesome...

More related to the post... my office uses/used Tom Tom units... again with the smart phones we issue they all use Waze or Google. Not much of a help, but i felt like typing apparently....

    :)

I hate to ask the obvious but why not use her smartphone? My phone is all I ever use for GPS when I need it, and it helps being able to tell it what directions I need hands free and plays over the car speakers. Just slap it on the phone mount for visual directions and you’ll also have the audio directions through speakers.

Well, remember the not-too-tech savvy part...? My wife doesn't have a cell phone at all, much less a smart phone...

I figured using the speech dictate feature would be usable but understandable!

I don't use a Garmin in my cars, but for all the Garmin products I've used, these are top notch. Many will disregard Garmin because there are certainly cheaper options, but I would see if you can get a demo on the specific unit you're interested in buying. A good Garmin unit will cost you $$, but if it fits what your wife needs I think you will like it a lot.

Not to pry but if she is having that much difficulty seeing at night, may be time for her not to drive at night. My wife had the same issue and no longer drives at night. Good luck in whatever you decide to get her.
