wife and I have been binge-watching expedition overland on prime video. We are up to season 3 south America. Great show featuring a 4runner, Tacoma and I forgot the other one. If you haven't seen it yet I recommend it for a nice video especially as the seasons progress the quality gets better.

If you like that, check out 4wd24-7 on YouTube. It’s Australian and they do some great adventures.

Prepare to start disliking them as the seasons progress. They begin acquiring apparatus that's beyond the reach of the common man, and, IMO, flaunting it.

They had a good idea with their "Overlander" sub-series but it ate a big D towards the end, too.

Really nice family. Watched a lot of it while overseas trapped in a CLU on my day off.

The Alaska one was pretty good, didn't really get into the central American one but really liked the South America one as they hit places I had always wanted to go. By the way, the 3rd vehicle was a Landcruiser in the 1st 2 and another 4Runner in the SA one.

I did notice that as the series progressed it turned more into an infomercial for the stuff they used, tents, clothes, vehicles, etc. I still enjoyed it, for the most part, sponsors want their air time you know.

What do you mean by apparatus? Just expensive gear that most of us can't afford?

Apparatus meaning the trucks, the equipment, the swag, the 'X hanger'... I mean they're driving a AEV Ram pulling a trailer with flying machines, dirt bikes, and Razrs. Maybe it's sheer jealousy talking, I don't know... but I'm unimpressed and my reaction to flaunting all their shit is more "fuck them" than "I want to go there "... and if you're filming an expedition show then the "there" should be your prime directive.

Don't get me wrong, season 1 - great. Season 2 - decent. 3 - ok. McKenzie- good, actually. Subsequent seasons - meh.

It was a decent show but what do you expect. How else do you pay for making a living wheeling around. 4wd24/7 is a much more entertaining show on you tube for watching expensive machines do crazy wheeling.

Ok I get you now. That makes sense to me. Watching people wheeling around with all kinds of expensive toys does take the fun out of watching. Yes, jealousy is a factor in it and I will be the last person to criticize that. Sounds like watching a show about camping, hiking, and normal outdoor activities and then have the guys staying in a million dollar motorhome at the end of the day. I will have to check it out anyway. Thanks!

Check out season 1. They are just a few goofy, normal dudes in a 1st gen Taco and a old LC. Everything is their own (notice they use BFG tires). No sponsers. They take fun jaunts to places normal Americans can go to. Well worth watching. Even now.

Then gradually they get more shit, get sponsored, etc. Once they start getting sponsored suddenly BFG's are pieces of shit and General Grabbers are the best tires ever made, ever. Show starts declining. It's gradual. Season 2 is still good but you can see the writing on the wall.

Most recent season was a laughable shit show. They literally have a $500,000 Quonset hut they store all their shit in, called 'The X Hanger'. They go into a Toyota dealership and write a check for a brand new Tundra. They have a shitload of brand new Toyotas and a brand new AEV Prospector RAM with Patriot camper. 3 of them go to Florida to flying school to learn how to fly jet packs and then they start bringing jet packs and dirt bikes with them on their overlanding trips. They wear uniforms. I mean, it's fucking ridiculous. It's embarrassing for them, honestly. It's like if you knew this kind of gangly, nerdy kid who was just a nice person in high school - and at your 10 year reunion he shows up with a half opened shirt exposing his fake tanned chest, gold chains tangled in his chest hair, with two big ol' fake-titted 20 year old blondes hanging on his arms. WTF, dude? What happened to you? When did you become a douchebag?

To some extent I think they tried to do their spinoff series, 'Overlander' to make their show more approachable but actually, they biffed at that, too. Hell, one episode which could have been great - about the TAT - was so fucking terrible there is no known person who has been documented as watching the entire thing. They have some hipster cocksmoke driving and every single person who has ever watched him has had the overwhelming desire to punch him repeatedly in the face.

But hell, I keep watching, so what does that say about me? I guess I keep hoping it'll get better. Spoiler alert: it don't...

Yeah but what’s wrong with it? Sure they do things most of us can’t afford or don’t want to put the effort in to do but who wouldn’t wanna spend a couple weeks driving down Central America and experience something out of the ordinary. Even if you didn’t wanna do it what’s wrong with at least experiencing it through the lens of someone else. I’m glad they did it they seem like decent sponsors of the U.S to be motoring around and meeting people and seeing things.
Any of us can go to utah and colorado and drive those trails. That’s fun to watch too and allows us to learn a few things for sure. But again. I can’t watch that over and over just because it’s more relatable.

think about this. There’s a million regular joes doing 4x4 videos of Moab on YouTube. Do we really need more of them?

I have zero issues with the destinations, just the mentality at play: must have best/ newest / most technical / priciest... otherwise the experience is SHIT!!!!

But as far as destinations go I think you do want them to be relatable... you want to be able to do the same shit. I can go to Moab for a week in my 4Runner with a ground tent so viewing stuff like that is fun and gives me ideas. I can't take 6 months off work and drive to Tierra del Fuego so while the journey is cool to follow, I don't feel that investment in the programming that I do if it's something I can personally do. Add to that the out of reach equipment and it becomes disinteresting.
