I am looking to replace my 05 V8 (best vehicle I ever owned) which I lost in a recent head-on collision. My budget is less than 30K would love to come in around 25K to 28K. I have thought about finding a low mileage 08 or 09 with the V8 (hard to find). Then having some money remaining to dress her for the woods. The second option is to look newer at maybe a 12 to 15 model with the V6. I know little about the V6 but feel it has to be rock solid since it is a Toyota and they have been out there for a long time. This is going to be fishing, camping play vehicle as I have a family car and pick up truck. Not into rock climbing or extreme off-roading these days but don't want to have to shy away from some pretty tough back roads and/or bad conditions. Have trips planned for far northern Canada (remote areas) and love Montana. My third option is to go with 13 or 14 Fj ... anybody have thoughts and/or advice on my options. Your input is why I'm on this site. All advice before I spend the money is appreciated.

    Welcome to the forum!

The 1GR V6 is a great motor. They definitely don't have the torque of those V8's, but they have enough. They're a bit noisy, but they seem to be pretty indestructible.

As far as 4runner VS FJ, I think it comes down to personal taste. I believe the 4runner has a bit more cargo space.

I don't really think there's a wrong choice here. Try to look at each option and go with whichever you like best.

Either choice that works for your style should be fine. The 4Runner has a bit more room and possibly less problems mechanically. Good luck and welcome.

That’s how I use mine. Try for an OR model with locking diff. The 4 doors is an advantage. Good visibility on a 4 Runner also. Headed for the Dempster Highway as soon as covid 19 allows.

    Welcome!
I share the same opinion as above - any of your options will suit your needs just fine. Therefore, I personally would go with the lowest cost option (why spend more if you don't need to?).

    Since I love car shopping:
'08 V8 with extremely low miles, leaving $6k to spare for mods to the low end of your budget.
19k seems like a lot for a 12-13 year old vehicle, but dang she's pretty

Only visible con: requires travel (big caveat: no frame pics, located in rust belt)
