Hello friends, I'm looking for a good wheel and tire kit for the winter for my 2017 4Runner limited. I'm starting to shop now because I don't like arriving at the last minute in the madness of the October tire change so I am doing it in advance. I also look for a dedicated winter tire set, so the summer performance is not important to me.

For the wheels, I think I'll go to the TRD replica wheels. https://www.canadawheels.ca/replika-wheels/r213-satin-black-w88754 . I think they will fit great on the 4R.

For the tires, I had 4 choices in mind, I know that they are very different type of tires, but I didn't set my mind and I especially wanted to have feedback if people have already tried them on their 4runner or any other vehicle. Another question, since im new to the BOF and Light Truck, I see that some tire are labeled LT265xxxxxx for light truck, and other are not. So what is the best for a 4Runner, the LT one or the normal tires. I search the web, and it seem the difference is mainly for larger truck, like shuttle or bigger. What the difference on a 4Runner ?

The first one that I find very good is the Nokian LT3 Studded or not (since the 4runner is very well soundproofed, are the nails really a challenge? Do we hear them a lot inside at highway speed?)

    Here is the link: https://www.nokiantires.com/winter-tires/nokian-hakkapeliitta-lt3/

The second tire I was considering was the Bridgestone Blizzak DM-V2. It looks fine, but I'm afraid it will wear out very quickly (generally the blizzak are known for wear out faster than other)

    Here the link : https://www.bridgestonetire.ca/tire/blizzak-dm-v2/

The third one is the Blizzak LT. He look like the DM-V2, but I don't know if the compound is the same, and he rated LT.

    Here the link : https://www.bridgestonetire.ca/tire/blizzak-lt/

And finally, the last one, is the Michelin Xice, they seem really interesting in ice, but the deep snow seem to be a real weak point for them. It is revelant on the 4 Runner since its 4wd ?

    Here the link : https://www.michelin.ca/fr/pneus/x-...toYear=2017&autoModel=4Runner&autoModClar=SR5

Thank for reading me :) and I open to suggestion ! Let me know what you have and if you like them !

    Have a nice day !

For what it's worth, you may want to consider an AT tire, and have them siped. I ran my DII on GY AT, all through the winters in Northern IL and up in the UP and Northern Wisconsin. They did great in several blizzards, and after 16" you can only push so much snow. Siping seemed to help with the grip on icy surfaces. Many tire installers up north have siping machines, we had a group deal at a Discount Tire up north of Chicago.

Personally, I've got the Blizzaks for my winter setup on my TRD wheels. I've had the Michelin's before and liked them, and went with the Bridgestone's purely off availability when I was ready to purchase.

Hi Archangel, thank you for you input, I was thinking about the blizzak Costco quote me the Blizzak DM-V2, but they warn me that they wear more quickly than the other. Did you get a great durability from your Blizzak ? Which model did you get ? Also which model of Michelin you had, I tried to find some here, they quote me the Xice 2 but they are not in stock right now.

I have the DM-V2's. I've had my Blizzaks for about 4-5 seasons. My tread still looks great. I will likely replace them anyway next year. The reason for this is the RMA (Rubber Manufacturers Association) recommends replacement REGARDLESS of tread depth at 5-6 years. After that period of time, the oil in the tire has almost completely dried out, the tire is less pliable, and more likely to have separations, blowouts due to the age.

Without being too forward, the people at Costco are idiots. After spending 15 years in the tire industry (not oil changes, alignments, or any mechanical work, JUST tires), what they're warning you about is EXACTLY what you want in a winter tire. Winter tires are specifically designed to provide traction, handling, stopping distance, and reliability BELOW 32*. For that very reason, the tires have a softer rubber composition to maximize their traction and pliability at the lower temperatures. I had the Michelin X-ice's on another SUV, and did everything I needed them to do. Honestly, either tire will do exactly what you're looking for. I'm not a big fan of Bridgestone personally, but I've been impressed with these Blizzaks.

    Hope this information helps.

Hi Archangel, again thank you very much for the information provide. So I will take a look at the blizzak, since they seem to be easily available here. I will have my dealer to quote me since I don't plan to go at Costco if I can have about the same price from the dealer. By the way, what do you think about these tires from Bridgestone, people seem to be they are really fast (can't say if its more or less than the DMV2) : https://www.bridgestonetire.ca/tire/blizzak-lt/#tire-reviews__strip-all

I will try to get some wheels too, its a headache to find something that will fit, but without rubbing. Maybe I will try to go with some 18 inch wheel, so they will be less wide than the 17 inch, so they will less likely rub in the fender.

    Thank you :)

The Blizzak LT is more designed for medium and heavy duty commercial applications. Also, keep in mind that if you go 18 inch, you'll need an 18 inch tire. The equivalent to the 265/70/17 is a 275/65/18 tire. The overall diameter is almost identical. Also, the wheel is about finding the correct offset. A wheel as referenced above is a 17x8" wheel with a zero offset. I'm sure your factory 20x7 has at least a +35 offset. What that means it simple terms is that the wheel above is one inch wider, and sits almost flush with the fender. Happy to assist anyway I can.

Does anyone have any experience with these tire : https://www.bridgestonetire.ca/tire/blizzak-lt/#tire-reviews__strip-all ? They seem like the DMV2
Nice, again, thank you Archangel, I'm don't know very well how offset work, its all new to me, I didn't even bother about it on my previous car because they had only 1 or 2 tire size, so it was way easier. I check quickly and it seem I must stay in the positive offset and not negative offset, since negative will take me further near the fender. So, the best it is to stay with the +35 offset with a 17inch wheel ? Or I need to go lower, like 10-20 range.

From what I see (from here https://www.canadawheels.ca/2017-toyota-4runner-wheels/v-172458) , most aftermarket 17inch wheel is between offset 5 and 25. The TRD pro have an offset of +4 if I read correctly the description, https://toyotaparts.mcgeorgetoyota....ck-alloy-wheel-now-back-in-stock-ptr2035110bk . I also read many post around 4runner and taco forum, some say it rub, and other don't, so I don't know. After talking with the dealer, the mecanic say that its also related to the tire type you put on your 4Runner, it seem that big mud tire, like the Grappler and Duratrac, will be most prone to rub, since they have a bigger "shoulder" block, when they are teamed with the wrong wheel, it will rub even more.

Also, one last question since you seem to know tire really well, did you ever try studded tires on your 4Runner ? I wonder if it really much noisier in the 4 Runner. I tried some studded in my previous old RAV4, it was unbearable ! It was so loud that I can't even talk with my passenger ;), I remove them after 2 weeks !

Your best bet IMO would be to stick with a 17 inch wheel for your winter setup. a 265/70/17 has more of a street tire design, and that is an OEM tire size for other models. If you keep your offset between +15 and +35, I think you should be fine. Studded tires can be a blessing and a curse. If you've never needed them before and you've stayed in the same geographical location as now, I think you'll be fine. You can always get the stud-able tires, and try putting studs in. If it's unbearable like before, you can have the studs removed and continue on the winter tires without issue. Good luck and show off some pictures when you've got them mounted up!

Hi Barcelona, I'm interested, but, since I'm in canada, it will probably cost too much to ship there. I will take a look at fedex at how much it cost to get it there.

Finally, I decided to go with the Blizzak DMV2 for the winter tire, I bought them in 17inch, 265-70-17. They seem really good. I will keep you updated of how they are.

Great choice! I'll be putting mine on in November. 2020 has already been a shit show, seems rather anticlimactic if the year didn't close with Nuclear Winter...

And I will take a look at UPS. What is the zip code? They are each in a box that weighs approximately 28lbs each. They are shipping from 80202 (Denver)

Yup, me too I will put them in November. I find used SR5 wheel, so this will be my winter tires set. Now I just wish they won't rub.

I may move to the snowy north and so have been thinking about this very question. Right now, I don't live in the snow belt so all-seasons are prob ok for me 99% of the time with my 2020 Limited.

But If I do move I'd be tempted to simply put Toyo AT3s on my stock wheels, since they appear to be good at a lot of things and have the Severe Snow rating. However, if I did feel the need to have a dedicated winter wheelset, I'd definitely go OEM TRD wheels and something like Blizzaks. Both are totally proven so you should have a lot of confidence in them. Frankly, I'm surprised by how many people go for aftermarket wheels when the TRD wheels are so inexpensive straight from Toyota. They're only $215 each in the official Toyota Accessories catalog. Personally, I wouldn't see a reason to buy something less proven, with possibly less quality control, unless they were a heck of a lot cheaper. And few wheels are a lot cheaper than that. With TRD, you know they fit and are made well. And less chance of warranty hassles with your dealer if something goes wrong that could be blamed on the wheels. Plus, IMO they look sweet.

Hi Singleminded, its why i buy some SR5 used wheel. In fact, after many post that I read about oem wheel, I trust even more the used SR5 wheel more than any new OEM wheel or replica wheel. I wish the TRD wheel was cheaper in Canada, I really wanted them, but they sell them about 350$ each wheel + tax (and we have 15% tax here), so its around 1600$, just for the wheel :( . The SR5 wheel I got, are about 3 years old, and I get them for 600$. I hear really good things about the Blizzak DMV2, I already had the Hakka R2 on my RAV4, I liked them, but they are way to expensive, I don't think they worth it compare to the DMV2.

Oh, meant to add that if I wanted to save money I'd also consider buying used ORP wheels from someone who'd upgraded to TRDs or whatever. Those look good too IMO, and again are confidence inspiring since an OEM wheel.

Yes, they are really great too I think, I try to find a set to replace my stock 20inch wheel on my limited. If you are in US, I'm sure you can get a set of used for a really good price. For winter, I get the SR5 and it will be ok, since they will be in the snow, salt, sand, rock ... I think the SR5 painted wheel will stand the winter here better than the ORP.
